Mt. Bethel UMC - Compassion Into Action
Message from the Minister

Dear Mt. Bethel,
We have received tons of e-mails as a result of our ministry to the homeless decision. I think this one pretty much sums it up!
                            The Spirit of Christmas
Randy, I have never e-mailed you before, but was moved to do so tonight.  I have been a member of MBUMC for 8 years, but never have I been so proud of our church as I was this evening. When I learned on Sunday of your idea to open the church to the homeless on freezing nights, I came home and told my children about it (they had been in their own worship services).  Their reaction truly left me speechless.
Children who had that very morning been talking nonstop about what they were "getting" for Christmas suddenly began looking outside themselves, and considering the lives of those less fortunate. The two younger ones actually cried as they envisioned the poor families sleeping outside in the cold. Within minutes after this, they all ran upstairs and brought down their piggy banks. "We want to help!" they said.  The kids I'd come to (jokingly) refer to as "human gimme pigs" had caught the spirit of Christ-mas!! I almost cried myself when my young son (age 8) handed over ten dollars of his own money - almost everything he had - and asked if it was enough.  I assured him it was.
This afternoon we drove to Walmart and filled our cart with 4 warm coats, 2 wool blankets, 5 hats, several pairs of thermal underwear and 3 pairs of jeans.  When we checked out, my daughters insisted on handing over their own hard-earned dollars - $35 in all - to the cashier, to supplement their brother's $10 and my own contribution. They were so proud! But the best part of all was when we arrived at the church Rec Center to deliver our donations. The building was bright and bustling with activity! Piles and piles of every kind of needed item filled the lobby, with one pile of pillows reaching all the way up to the ceiling! Members of the congregation were streaming in by the dozens, carrying even more armloads of donations. Volunteers were sorting the piles and smiling as they worked and greeted all who came in. The children and I felt the excitement of being part of something special. Christ's love was working through us all, and the Spirit was palpable!!
If I get nothing else for Christmas this year, It will still be the best holiday ever, because I experienced Christ's love firsthand, and watched my children rise above their own wants to spread that love to others.  Thanks to you and to all the members of Mt. Bethel for reminding me that there is still good in this world.
                - Name Withheld -

God Bless Us All and Merry Christmas!!!
                Randy

Thank you Mt. Bethel for your support with all the prayers and wonderful remembrances for the life of a friend, wife, Grandmother, Mother, Tillie Womack Hindman.  Thank you to the Diane Mickler Circle, the Women's Ministry and the Music Ministry, as from the first time she walked into Mt. Bethel in 1953, Mt. Bethel was home. Our family is so thankful to everyone and especially Rev. Mickler for the wonderful, loving, and fitting service as she entered into the Father's house. It was truly a wonderful Thanksgiving of her life and your love will make this a very Merry Christmas for our family. Appreciation could never be expressed enough to the entire Mt. Bethel family, Virginia Day, and for that 'Little Chapel' that will always be the foundation of our family. Thank you again,
James G. Hindman, Kathy, Ned, Matthew, Amanda Sparkman, and Carol & Jeff Butler

The Mike Sappington Helping Hand Fund gives to our fellow church members and community in need without the awkward part. Why not give to those right at home this year?

Bethel, please go to mtbethel.org  On the front page of the website, go to the "online giving" button, located near the bottom of the main web page.
