Mt. Bethel UMC - Compassion Into Action
Message from the Minister

"Talking Through His Hat"
Just as the organ began, in a crowded worship service, a man wearing a brown hat was ushered into a front pew. Since he continued to wear the hat, one of the ushers approached him and suggested, kindly, that he take it off. "No," he said, "I prefer to keep it on."
There was some consternation at the back of the church and the senior usher asked the man to remove his hat but he, too, was rebuffed. Even greater consternation reigned and the administrator was enlisted to make an appeal, which he did, only to have the man under the hat reply, "I have every right to keep on my hat, and I intend to do so."
The administrator retreated, but then had the bright idea of asking the President of the Women's Group to ask the man to remove his hat, thinking a woman might succeed where a man failed. Alas, she, too, failed.
The service continued and throughout it all, the hat was glued to the head of the unknown man. The preacher was much dismayed at the breach of decorum. During the sermon, the preacher could not help but have his attention riveted on the brown hat and his sermon suffered accordingly. After the recessional, while the people were being greeted as they left, the preacher asked the "hatted" man to remain for a few minutes. After everyone else departed, in a kindly way the preacher said, "It is nice to meet you, and it was a pleasure to have you with us today and I do hope you will return every Sunday." The preacher continued, "However, it is the custom for men to remove their hats in church, I hope you will conform to that practice in the future."
The man under the hat replied, "Thank you. I enjoyed today's service and now I thank you for taking time to talk to me. It's good of you to invite me to join the church. In fact, I joined it three years ago and have been attending regularly ever since, but today is the first time that anyone paid attention to me. After being unknown for three years, today, by simply keeping on my hat, I have had the pleasure of talking to ushers, the administrator, the Women's President, and now I have had a pleasant conversation with you . . . you have all been too busy to talk to me before. I feel very good about this and wish to express my appreciation!" . . .
. . . See you Sunday at the place where no one is too busy to talk to anyone!

Operation Christmas Child/Mt. Bethel Commitment Sunday | Sunday, November 21 | Both Worship Services

Life changed forever for Mahdat when he received a shoe box at a church in his Tajikistan village. The change was not the result of the gifts he found in his box, though he treasured the candy, toothpaste, and colored pencils.  He was most excited about the Gospel storybook that he received with his box.  The storybook led to questions and his ultimate acceptance of Jesus as his Savior.  The Gospel storybooks that are distributed with the shoe boxes are now printed in 70 languages.  Once they receive their shoe boxes, the boys and girls are invited to participate in a voluntary Bible study course produced by Samaritan's Purse. Join others from Mt. Bethel as we fill shoe boxes with gifts of love and hope and bring them to a service on Sunday, November 21 for dedication. Flyers with packing information and labels are located throughout the church. Additionally, you can print your own packing label at samaritanspurse.org. For more information, contact Carmen Abernathy.

The Atlanta Center for Self-Sufficiency (formerly the Samaritan House) has already gotten requests for winter wear (coats, jackets, gloves, caps, scarves, ear muffs, etc.) In addition, they always have a need for men and women's dress clothes, i.e. suits, dresses, sport coats, slacks, dress shirts, blouses (please use hangers), ties, shoes and belts to wear on job interviews. Casual clothes, men's leather dress shoes and new underwear & socks are also needed. Drop items off at the Missions trailer to the left of the CAC. Tax receipts are available in the front desk of the CAC. For more information, please contact Sam Smith at 770-565-8233.
