Mt. Bethel UMC - Compassion Into Action
Message from the Minister

Where's Your Passion?
Football season is nearly half over. Everywhere, teams are practicing harder than ever in order to make this season a successful winning season. Many players are rededicating themselves to "whatever-it-takes," to elevate their play on the field. No doubt, those endless hours of drills and practices and play-making will provide each team a better chance of winning the big games remaining on the schedule.
Have you ever considered the sacrifices athletes willingly make in order to play or perform just a little better? They will curtail all activities that interfere with one's physical, mental or spiritual preparation for a game. They deny themselves certain foods, drinks, even dates! Why?! It's because they are committed to their school, victory and coach.
I've often wondered what would happen if more of us approached Jesus Christ with the same commitment and passion as we do other fields of interest, such as football. Each week, new members stand before the church and pledge their faithfulness to Jesus Christ with their prayers, presence, gifts and service. That's total commitment.
What happens when a ballplayer refuses to be faithful concerning the required commitments of the game? He or she is removed from the team!
. . . We have decided that commitments to Jesus Christ are more crucial and deserve more importance than all other commitments! Since Mt. Bethel has a limited number of spaces available in the church, we are becoming very strict regarding commitments. Therefore, no one will be allowed to remain in Mt. Bethel as a member who is less than serious regarding their commitment. Therefore, in order to remain a member of this "team," one must not miss more than one worship service every ten weeks. The same goes for Wednesday evening activities. One must become serious about their tithes and offerings, no more token giving. Regarding service - everyone will be required to serve in some capacity: teach, mission trips, choirs, MUST or some other work with the "least and last." Those members not currently active will be given seven days to renew their passion and commitment. Otherwise, they will be removed from the rolls . . . !
Of course, the paragraph above is fictitious. Mt. Bethel will never turn anyone out, nor can anyone be forced to be faithful. But what was your reaction? Maybe it's time to rediscover your passion for Christ and His team.
Surely, a Christian's passion for Christ and His Cause is more passionate than any other kind of passion!???

Mini Day of Service - Saturday, October 30 - Mark your fall calendar for this wonderful morning of community outreach. Mt. Bethel's Mini Day of Service is different from the Spring Great Day of Service in that we focus on helping families rather than organizations. The Mini Day is a way to personally reach out to families with special needs and to senior members of our congregation who have given so much to Mt. Bethel.  Most of the jobs include raking, cleaning, mulching, and digging, so it is a great opportunity to serve as a family! Register online today.

Mt. Bethel's Not So Scary TRUNK OR TREAT - Saturday, October 30, from 5:30-7:00pm In the Fairfield Parking Lot. Check in at 5:15-5:30 for parking cars and setting up. Cars will remain parked until dismissal at 7:00pm. Your ticket in is a canned food item . . .  which will be donated to MUST Ministries Food Bank. Come in costume, decorate your trunk, bring candy to share. We'll have Jumpies, DJ Tall Mikey and games. Dinner is hot dogs, chips and lemonade. Bring your whole family for an evening of fun. In case of rain, this event will be cancelled. Questions? Call Dianne Hylton 770-971-5074.

Fall Family Harvest and Wild Game Banquet - Friday, November 5, from 5:30-9:00pm at the Sappington Pavilion on the "Fields of Dreams" - This is a fellowship event for the entire family. A chance for children to sample the flavors and sights of hunting. Food will again this year be from Mark Hellman & Running Wild Foods. Plans are to have duck as the signature dish. All those who attend are encouraged to share their own harvest prepared as they like it. You may bring something to throw on the grill. Sides & drinks will be provided. Desserts are welcome! Remember: this is not a "men's only" event. Bring the family! The speaker this year will be Mr. Scott James from Ducks Unlimited. Jim will be speaking on his organization and the conservation in which they are involved. He will also discuss duck hunting. Register online by November 1.

We have lots of dates available for you to reserve the altar flowers. The arrangements are $60 each. Please call or email Debi Wyatt 678-560-2437.

Mt. Bethel is pleased to offer a preventive health event. Life Line Screening, a leading provider of community-based preventive health screenings, will host their affordable, non-invasive, painless health screenings on Monday, November 15. Five screenings will be offered that scan for potential health problems related to: blocked arteries, which is a leading cause of stroke; abdominal aortic aneurysms, which can lead to a ruptured aorta; hardening of the arteries in the legs, which is a strong predictor of heart disease; atrial fibrillation or irregular heartbeat, which is closely tied to stroke risk; and a bone density screening, for men and women, used to assess the risk of osteoporosis. Register for the Stroke, Vascular Disease and Heart Rhythm Package for $139. All four ultrasound screenings take 60-90 minutes to complete. Your health is in your hands, so call 1-888-653-6441 for more information or to pre-register.
