Mt. Bethel UMC - Compassion Into Action
Message from the Minister

On Giving
In 1731 John Wesley began to limit his expenses so that he would have money to give "to the Lord's work." He records that one year his income was 30 pounds and his living expenses were 28 pounds, so he had two pounds to give away. The next year his income doubled, but he still managed to live on 28 pounds, so he had 32 pounds to give to the "Lord's work." In the third year, his income jumped to 90 pounds. Instead of letting his expenses rise with his income, he kept them at 28, and gave away 62 "to the Lord's work." The fourth year he received 120 pounds. As before, his expenses were 28 pounds, so his giving rose to 92 pounds.
John Wesley's example of giving is not the modern-day pattern of giving. According to Gallup, offerings decrease as income increases, on the average. The Gallup people found that low and moderate income Americans, including churchgoers, are more generous than upper income Americans.
The Reverend Reuben Tinker, an eloquent Presbyterian minister, observed in 1830, "the heavier the purse hangs down, the tighter the strings."
It has been my observation that the "givers" of this world fair better than the "non-givers." In fact, Jesus confirms this in Luke's Gospel: "Give, and it shall be given to you; good measure, passed down, shaken together, running over, will be the measure you receive." (Luke 6:38)
Currently, Mt. Bethel's giving is 11% below last year's at this time. This would be a great time for those of us who can give more than our "fair-share" to do so.
And may your receivings match your givings.

See you at the Receiving & Giving Place!
                      Randy

Mt. Bethel is pleased to offer a preventive health event. Life Line Screening, a leading provider of community-based preventive health screenings, will host their affordable, non-invasive, painless health screenings on Monday, November 15. Five screenings will be offered that scan for potential health problems related to: blocked arteries, which is a leading cause of stroke; abdominal aortic aneurysms, which can lead to a ruptured aorta; hardening of the arteries in the legs, which is a strong predictor of heart disease; atrial fibrillation or irregular heartbeat, which is closely tied to stroke risk; and a bone density screening, for men and women, used to assess the risk of osteoporosis. Register for the Stroke, Vascular Disease and Heart Rhythm Package for $139. All four ultrasound screenings take 60-90 minutes to complete. Your health is in your hands, so call 1-888-653-6441 for more information or to pre-register.

You can change a youth's life by mentoring- Jesus Christ is the Master of all mentors. He has commanded us to go and make disciples. What could be more fulfilling than to lead an at-risk teenager to know God, make good choices, and possibly take up the mentoring baton himself? Are there challenges - yes. Is it possible you might never reach your mentee? Yes, but it is also possible there are discussions that the two of you have that he/she will remember later - that will lead to better choices and a better life through Christ. Join Opportunity Knocks for Youth, a faith-based organization dedicated to improving the lives of at-risk teens, and begin your mentoring experience. In addition to mentoring, OK for Youth needs volunteers to help with fundraising and technology. Contact Bill Spell at 404-245-2274 or Dale Champion at 678-641-1968. To learn more about us go to our website ok4youth.org. Your mentoring could transition into a lasting friendship that changes two lives, not just one

Casual clothes, men's leather dress shoes and new underwear & socks are also needed. Drop items off at the Missions trailer to the left of the CAC.
