Mt. Bethel UMC - Compassion Into Action
Message from the Minister

What an amazing summer it has been at St. Philip, Mt. Bethel's mission church in the shadows of Osborne High School. We have made great strides at building the needed relationships in the community to make the mission of the church a reality. All of this is made possible by the generous support of Mt. Bethel and the investment is paying off.
The summer began with taking 20 children from the community to Camp Evergreen.  They had a wonderful time and were impacted with the love of Christ. It was on the trip home that I truly began to grasp how great the need was in the community. I asked the children, "What was your favorite part of camp?" Hands down the response was "the food." I thought to myself, "Camp food is not that great," so I asked one of the teenagers that went as a volunteer about the food. She said to me, "Jon, you just don't understand, during the summer most of us only get one meal a day." Wow, what a shot to my East Cobb mentality and a wake-up call to the impact we can have with these children.
As the summer progressed, we did Wednesday night activities with these children and had 45-50 each night. When VBS rolled around we had 113 children on our largest night. For the July Mt. Bethel VBS Family Fun Night we brought 87 kids from the community to Mt. Bethel to enjoy the incredible night of fun.
In addition to the children's ministry, we have begun to build relationships with youth at Osborne High School. Thanks to small groups and Sunday School Classes from Mt. Bethel, we were able to provide evening meals at St. Philip to the Osborne band each night of Band Camp.  The students were very appreciative as they marched each night to the church to eat dinner. At the close of Band Camp, they did their end of camp performance on the St. Philip ballfield. Over 250 students and parents lined the field for this celebration.
Thank you to the Mt. Bethel groups that have made all of these ministries a success.  At the same time I am saying thanks I also need to ask for help. In many ways our ministry has been more successful than our volunteers can handle.  The biggest need is for our weeknight ministry that will be on Thursday evenings from 5:30-7:30. We will need small group leaders (high school and older), crowd control, food servers, and bus drivers. Please pray about coming to St. Philip to serve Christ and these children. The Scripture that says, "The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few" is a reality at St. Philip. One look into the eyes  of the children will show you the impact that you are making.
                    Love in Christ,
                    Jon Ponders, Associate Pastor

Construction of Mt. Bethel's 28th & 29th Habitat Homes begins Tuesday, September 7. Volunteers are needed to build the homes - no experience required. Work days are Tuesday, September 7 through Saturday, September 11; Saturday, September 18; Monday, October 4 through Saturday, October 9; Saturday,  October 16; Saturday, October 30 (dedication). Volunteers can sign up at the Habitat table on Sunday mornings in September or at mtbethel.org/habitat.

Who will feed the Habitat volunteers while they are building? Perhaps your business, small group, Bible study or Sunday school class? Each of those days there are from 15-30 volunteers we need to feed well so they can do the work we are called to do. So if you don't think you can't paint or hold a hammer, you can be a part of this incredible mission by serving those who can. Please call Sue Stone at 770-977-3273 to sign up for your date.

The purpose of Moms in Touch (MIT) is to intercede for our children through prayer and to pray that our schools may be guided by biblical values and high moral standards. Join an existing prayer group for Murdock, Timber Ridge, Dodgen, Pope OR start a new one for Dickerson, Shallowford Falls, Addison, etc. MIT groups are specific to YOUR child's public or private elementary, middle or high school praying the four steps of prayer:  Praise, Confession, Thanksgiving, Intercession.
