Message from the Minister
I received the following hand-delivered letter last week. I thought it deserved sharing!
"Dear Pastor Mickler, "I want to stop and tell you how your church touched my family today. They did so not even knowing who we are, what we have, or where we're from. What they did was reach out with love, period! "First, so you won't think I'm knocking the church, I want you to know I grew up in church and love God. My grandfathers, father, mother, late husband, siblings, uncles, aunts and cousins serve/d as ministers, pastors, musicians, worship leaders, missionaries and more in the church. What I am noticing is so many churches in the Greater Atlanta area alone that it is especially hard choosing which ones to fellowship with. There are also numerous mega churches where it's too easy to become just another number rather than a member or a person. Instead of compassion, there's politics, bureaucracy, classism, prejudice, doctrinisms, and other walls that divide the Body of Christ in ways that bring no pleasure to God. Your church is different. This church reminds me of the following scriptures that seem to be taking a back seat on many a church pew. 'Whatever you do unto the least of these, you do unto me.' 'Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the Kingdom of Heaven.' "What happened during my encounter with Mt. Bethel United Methodist Church in Marietta is as follows. My 13-year-old daughter, who loved attending Vacation Bible School while growing up, can no longer reap its benefits as a student. We recently discovered that she could still enjoy VBS by serving as a youth volunteer. New to Cobb County, we located on the internet different churches including yours not too far from us that would allow her to serve as a youth volunteer. It was late in the planning stages of most VBS and we did get a late start. To further complicate matters, my daughter will soon be going away to other camp programs after this week. We wrote letters to several youth directors and of all the lovely prominent churches, yours was the only church that did not turn her away. Sure, they had good reasons and didn't mean any harm to her. But, that special touch to invite a stranger in and the excitement that comes when a child wants to come to church is still so alive and well in your youth ministry. The physical edifice of your church is superbly beautiful in its architectural design. But what's even more beautiful is what goes on inside and beyond the church's walls which is caring, sharing and embracing. There is so much work to be done in God's kingdom that one more hand won't hurt is the statement your staff expressed so unselfishly that blessed us tremendously. I want to say to you and your staff, thank you." Name withheld - June 7, 2010
God Bless You, Mt. Bethel, Randy
