Message from the Minister
In God's Name
One Sunday after church was over, past one o'clock, I was leaving the building. One of our local joggers was resting near the main entrance. He was mopping his brow, and catching his breath. He did not call me by name, but he called to me: "Mr., you got a minute?" I stopped and without further ado, he said, "What in God's name is going on in this place?" Before I could answer, he continued, "I have been dodging traffic, going and coming, on my jog. I have had two near misses and a bus nearly backed over me!" I tried to answer, and he continued, "Is there some kind of church conference going on?" I finally got in a word. "No, this is just a regular Sunday at Mt. Bethel. The traffic is heavy, the buses are running to bring people in who park off site!" He was still shaking his head . . . as I prepared to say more, and then he asked, "Who is the preacher here . . . what's he like?" I said to him, "I know him pretty well - he's a great human being! You'd like him!" Then I walked on, but there was an arresting phrase that has stuck with me . . . "What, in God's Name, is going on here?"
The answer is . . . everything that we are doing here is in God's name! It is for God that we nourish and nurture our children. It is for God that we feed the hungry. It is for God that we build for the homeless. It is for God that we have Sunday School class and Life Groups. It is for God that we have an Academy. It is for God that we worship. It is for God that we reach out to the Last and Lost here and around the world. All we do here is for God, and it is provided for by a generous and joyous response of God's warm-hearted people, the members of this church. Everything we do here is for God, paid for by our stewardship. Thus far, $6.3 million have been committed by 1,017 families toward the new fiscal operating budget. We have yet to hear from 1,400 families. The crucial question is this, "If you are one of those unheard from church families, what are you doing in God's name?!" If this church is to make a difference "for God" in this community and world, we must have everyone's help. Please . . . return your commitment card today . . . "In God's Name!" Randy
