Message from the Minister

"The Stories Jesus Told"

What was God's purpose for Jesus? Simply stated, it was to redirect the thinking and understanding of human beings toward the Creator. God's task for Jesus was not an easy one.

The earliest humans allowed fear to take root in their hearts and that caused a misunderstanding regarding the true nature of God. For reasons that will never be fully clear, they listened to a serpent's twisted version of God's identity. Once the image of mistrust took over their minds and hearts, they became little more than terrified children. They saw threats everywhere and reasoned that an unkind God was out to get them.

This was the challenge Jesus faced. Since their expulsion from the Garden, humans operated out of a false perception of God. This false perception was threatening to destroy God's dream of sharing His joy with His children. How could the light of His truth be shared, allowing humankind to escape the darkness of their suspicious hearts?

Jesus perfected the art of telling stories to illustrate God's truth. He called the stories parables and they became the most distinctive form of His teaching. His parables consisted of three distinctive characteristics: First, the images Jesus used were familiar and drawn from the everyday life of His listeners. Even the most uneducated adult could identify with the situations, objects and people that He chose as the subjects of His stories. Secondly, His stories were characterized by intriguing plots. He drew His listeners into the story, lowering their defenses and allowing new insights. Thirdly, He usually always presented a surprise ending.

In this way, the parables brought new revelations and better understanding regarding the truth of God's loving nature. Trust replaced fear in the hearts of the listeners. Eventually, that trust led to love as the true nature of God was revealed and understood.

During Lent, we will reexamine the stories Jesus told and, perhaps, gain a clearer vision as to our true selves and His pure love. Please join us each Sunday!

See You at the Story-Telling Place,
                    Randy

Young Adult Mission Trip this Summer- From June 2-16, a group of young adults from Mt. Bethel will be traveling to Kenya to make His love complete by loving those He chooses to put in our path. We will join with Glory Outreach Assembly, an East African organization devoted to making Christian disciples of all nations, and serve in several orphanages throughout Kenya. Opportunities for this specific trip will include spending time with orphans of all ages, providing Vacation Bible School-type activities for the children, evangelizing in various communities, and feeding those who are living on the streets. In order to best serve those whom we will be visiting, we have chosen to sacrifice some of our physical comfort and camp on the orphanage grounds. This will enable us to spend more time with the children and get to know them better as we live alongside of them for these two weeks. We will, however, have a chance to shower and sleep at a hotel every 3-4 days throughout the trip. This trip will be physically, emotionally, and spiritually demanding, but we believe God will provide our every need and sustain us throughout our journey. There will be another trip to Kenya in July if the nature of this trip does not appeal to you. Anyone can sign up for this trip; final cost will not exceed $3400; Mt. Bethel UMC will pay 1/2 of church member's costs who have not been on a foreign mission trip before or if you are under 23 years old. Please contact Gaylyn Kelly if you have any other questions. Final costs will be announced as soon as possible. To register for this trip, e-mail Gaylyn Kelly, fill out the short-term mission trip forms on this site, and drop off a $400 non-refundable deposit. If you have any trouble downloading the forms please contact Heather Wood in the Missions Department.
