Message from the Minister
"God is Working!"
I received the following update last week and wanted to share it with you. "Dear Randy and Mt. Bethel, Since coming to St. Philip in September of 2007, my husband and I have learned so much from this community of believers. In January of 2008, I began teaching the teen Sunday School class with another Mt. Bethel member. At that time, the class consisted of four girls who had been attending St. Philip their whole lives. We were excited to welcome the first young man into our class, after much prayer, a few months later. I will call the young man M and share his story. M lives with his stepfather in a rough apartment complex within walking distance of St. Philip. There are frequent shootings in the complex. When we visit the complex to invite people to St. Philip, we are greeted with hostility, but are always humbled as the residents rarely have any furniture or food in the apartments. This is where most of our children and youth live. M was a struggling student. He was not able to read very well. The girls were patient with him as he struggled through the words in the Bible. They never made fun of him. A self-proclaimed fighter, M had a reputation in his apartment complex for taking swings at kids who made him angry. We challenged him to attend DNOW at Mt. Bethel last year. Praise God, M accepted Christ that DNOW weekend! Now, a year later, M is in Honors classes at Osborne High School. He is on the football and tennis teams. He joined St. Philip and is part of the Sunday morning praise band and the youth dance team. He has given his testimony in church, performed in the youth Christmas Eve service, reads Scripture during Sunday services and has dreams of going into full-time ministry one day. I have countless stories to tell. We now have separate high school and middle school youth groups. They now sponsor a child in Romania by raising money doing chores in members' houses. In addition to the youth, we have children, ages 4 and up, who walk themselves to church every week. They serve as acolytes, play on our soccer teams, and share what they learned about Jesus in Sunday School. The majority have no fathers. The St. Philip congregation has become their family. This church family concept was very apparent to me when we Baptized one of the children. When Jon invited those who would like to support the young person at the altar, almost the entire congregation came forward. It was so exciting as we are valuable parts of each other's lives . . . "
The average attendance in St. Philip's worship service is now 71. That's almost a four-fold increase since Mt. Bethel adopted St. Philip. God is at work in both churches and lives are being changed! God Bless Mt. Bethel and St. Philip, Randy

Ash Wednesday Services - February 17 - 7:30am, 12:00pm and 6:30pm in the Sanctuary - The Sacrament of Holy Communion will be served at all three services. The sign of the cross is placed upon the forehead with ashes as a symbol of repentance during Communion. The sign of the cross is not removed during the day, allowing all who see it to know of the individual's acceptance of, and allegiance to, Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.
This Sunday, to culminate the end of our sermon series "Wholehearted Love", a collaborative art installation will be on display in the Sanctuary. Our children have drawn "quilt blocks" on the theme "What Family Means to Me." These blocks have been joined together to form a Mt. Bethel Family Quilt. A quilt can be an apt symbol for the family...disparate pieces of cloth, joined together with care and design, to form a new entity...one that provides comfort and warmth when we most need it. Some quilts are orderly, and unified...others are a complete jumble of colors and shapes. Whether your family is a model of design or a complete "crazy quilt," we know that we are knit together in God's perfect design. Come early and check out the children's artwork!
If you are a visitor to Mt. Bethel, please join us on Sunday, February 21, for a lunch to learn more about our church and get to know our ministers. Join Dr. Randy Mickler and other members of our staff for a light lunch following the 11:00 service in the small dining room adjacent to the fellowship hall. Please contact Krista Young - 678-560-7226 to RSVP. We hope that you & your family will be able to join us. Nursery will be available.
If you are visiting Mt. Bethel for the first time, please see one of our Greeters. They have information about Children's Worship, Nursery & Sunday School options. If you wish to become a member or would like to receive our monthly newsletter, please contact our Membership Office, 678-560-7226.

Young
Adult Mission Trip this Summer- From June 2-16, a group of
young adults from Mt. Bethel will be traveling to Kenya to make His love
complete by loving those He chooses to put in our path. We will join with Glory
Outreach Assembly, an East African organization devoted to making Christian
disciples of all nations, and serve in several orphanages throughout Kenya.
Opportunities for this specific trip will include spending time with orphans of
all ages, providing Vacation Bible School-type activities for the children,
evangelizing in various communities, and feeding those who are living on the
streets. In order to best serve those whom we will be visiting, we have chosen
to sacrifice some of our physical comfort and camp on the orphanage grounds.
This will enable us to spend more time with the children and get to know them
better as we live alongside of them for these two weeks. We will, however, have
a chance to shower and sleep at a hotel every 3-4 days throughout the trip.
This trip will be physically, emotionally, and spiritually demanding, but we
believe God will provide our every need and sustain us throughout our journey.
There will be another trip to Kenya in July if the nature of this trip does not
appeal to you. Anyone can sign up for this trip; final cost will not exceed
$3400; Mt. Bethel UMC will pay 1/2 of church member's costs who have not
been on a foreign mission trip before or if you are under 23 years old. Please
contact Gaylyn Kelly if you have any other questions. Final costs will be
announced as soon as possible. To register for this trip, e-mail Gaylyn Kelly, fill out the
short-term mission trip forms on this site, and drop off a $400 non-refundable
deposit. If you have any trouble downloading the forms please contact Heather Wood in the
Missions Department.
