Way of Nature Fellowship Action Alert  November 8, 2010

Dear friends,

We are asking all our readers to take action quickly to help avert three serious threats to the Crestone area and Gaia Sanctuary,  where many Sacred Passage programs are held.

Threat # 1:  The Air Force is proposing to make Crestone and the Sangre de Cristos an MOA (military operations area) for LATN ( low altitude technical navigation). This would involve low level ( minimum 200') flyovers of CU-22 Ospreys and C-130s, respectively the most accident-prone, and nosiest and most polluting of military aircraft. They would fly 3 sorties per night, each lasting up to 5 hours.

They hope to get away with an EA (environmental assessment ), which in these cases amounts to a rubber stamp. We need to push for an EIS (environmental imopact statement).  The period for public comment ends on November 15th at 4 p.m.

Comments can be :   emailed to  27SOWpublicaffairs@cannon.af.mil

                                  phoned to  575-784-4131

If you need talking points, click here to read the body of an excellent scoping letter written by Mathew Crowley of Shumei Inst.

Threat #2:   U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is ready to start another EA (environmental assessment)  for Lexam's proposal to drill for natural gas and oil in the Baca National Wildlife Refuge near Crestone. We're trying to get a serious mineral rights buy-out proposal  going, to end that threat forever.  Comment period ends this Wednesday,November 10th.  Email comments to BacaScopingComments@fws.gov

Threat # 3: In mid-October Saguache County Commissioners gave Tessera Solar a green light for their 1,525 acre project near Crestone, despite glaring omissions in the permit process. This project is solar done wrong, involving use of 5.760 noisy Stirling engines. To read more about this gravely flawed project and sign a petition to stop it, go to http://slvrenewablecommunities.blogspot.com

Comments on the project will be accepted until November 19th at  wmaez@saguachecounty-co.gov

Last year you, our readers were instrumental in stopping open-pit gold mining near our center in Todos Santos. Mexico. We can be successful- every voice counts. Please help!  Thank you!
