Update from our October Meeting
If you attended our October Meeting, you heard Brandon call SafeMart Alarm Company to demostrate their customer support. We didn't believe it when the ACD said, "press 5 to speak to the President." Brandon left a message. Well, it so happens that the President of Safemart did return Brandon's call. Brandon explained that he was doing a presentation to an IT professional association and was using SafeMart as an example of the reach that customer support can take. The President responded by saying he wished he was in his office to take the call.
How cool is that!!
Don't miss a meeting, you never know what can happen! |

Everything I Learned about IT I Learned in 1983 as a Roller Rink Manager
By Rebecca Blau
In 1983, Ronald Regan was President, Bill Gates was 28 and there were only about 2 million personal computers in the world. Rebecca Blau, in 1983, had a Master's degree in Marketing and was riding the wave of popularity of roller skating sweeping the nation as General Manager of Playland Roller Rink in Atlanta, Georgia. At the time, she had no idea that she would go on to a career in IT and even less insight that her roller rink experience would serve her so well in that career. Rebecca's "All I Learned about IT I Learned in 1983 as a Roller Rink Manager" presentation is fun and informative. You'll enjoy hearing about how being a roller rink manager paved the way to a successful IT career.

About the Speaker
Rebecca Blau is Project Manager at Franklin Templeton Investments in San Mateo. She has a Master's degree in Business/Marketing from Northwestern University, Evanston, IL. Rebecca started working in IT in 1987 entirely by accident. As she was trying to figure out what career she wanted to pursue and while working as a temp at a company putting in a Novell 2.0a network, she had her first taste of IT support. Questions related to the network and WordPerfect 4.2 came to the CFO. Rebecca's responsibility of answering his phone inadvertently transferred her role into Help Desk technician. Wanting to be even more helpful, Rebecca read the book "Running DOS" and immediately recognized her calling.
Information technology, Rebecca discovered, was the perfect blend of art and science. Since then, Rebecca has held many IT positions, including CIO of a major LA law firm and since moving to the Bay Area, Service Desk Manager for the City of Santa Clara and a high-tech software company. |
