What's Mine is Yours - a glimpse of the future
I’ve just finished reading "What's Mine Is Yours: How Collaborative Consumption is Changing the Way We Live " by Rachel Botsman and Roo Rogers. It’s thought-provoking and highly readable.
Many of its peers are the former, but rarely the latter.
What distinguishes it from so many earnest environmental doorstops telling us to reduce waste, reduce consumption,
be good and wear a hairshirt, is that it understands that this revolution has to be lead by consumer demand and great design.
And the companies which understand this will make a lot of money. Given the enormity of the issues facing our planet,
it is also hugely optimistic.
Rachel and Roo lay out the context for the need for change: why we’re in this unsustainable mess and why it doesn’t need to be this way.
Then they explain the major ways in which well designed products and services will lead to reduced consumption:
I found the sections on trust particularly useful and I’m waiting to see the first reputation platform emerge,
bringing together our reputations on ebay, Zopa, Couchsurfing , RelayRides etc. Ironically the only area of sharing
that wasn’t really covered was the creation of private syndicates and sharing of large assets between small groups of private individuals
similar to the sharing enabled by yours2share.
If you want to understand what sharing means in its widest sense, see how the internet enables this,
work out how your company needs to evolve to capitalise on this, or simply find out how your lives are likely
to be changed over the next ten years, it is well worth reading.
If you don't know who Rachel is, here she is speaking at a recent TED conference. |

22m Sunseeker. South of France. Share it.
If you’ve been contemplating buying a serious motor yacht and mooring it in a desirable location,
but wondering if you could really justify the cost, read on. SmartYacht currently has two remaining quarter shares available in a Sunseeker Manhattan 66 based in Antibes on France’s Cote d’Azure. This beautiful fly-bridge motor yacht, with three cabins and three bathrooms,
was built in 2006 with only 480 engine hours, and had one previous owner who didn’t charter it.
In June 2011 the owners can start using their Sunseeker. SmartYacht charter the boat when the owners
are not using it to offset the running costs.
The cost of a quarter share is £197,500.
SmartYacht also has quarter shares available in a Fairline 58 based in Mallorca. Built in 2004, with 465 engine hours,
the management and charter arrangements are similar to the Sunseeker above. The cost of a quarter share is 187,500 euros (about £ 163,000).
SmartYacht provides a hassle-free and intelligent way to own your own motor yacht in some of the very best locations in the Med.
A three-season-system for bookings and an online reservation system guarantee a fair and flexible allocation of time among the owners.
All the yacht management is included in the service cost, some of which is likely to be covered by charter income.
Owners own a share in the yacht rather than simply the right to use it and may sell their share at any time.

And finally, here are a few of yours2share's recent ads that I really
like.
Selected ads are entirely my choice, but the quality of the pictures is the key factor. Remember this if you are posting an ad. |
