An alternative to chartering a motor yacht If you regularly charter a motor yacht, then this new scheme from Yacht Investments should interest you. They’ve put together fractional share packages to buy a range of Fairline yachts: they are expecting to buy three Fairline boats, the Squadron 42, Squadron 50 and Squadron 58 over the next 14 months. You can buy fractions in multiples of a hundredth of a boat to suit your needs and budget. So you can buy 1% of a Squadron 42 for £6,000, or 5% of a Squadron 50 at £50,000 or 10% of a Squadron 58 costing £140,000. Each 1/100 share entitles you to one week on the boat in the five year period of ownership. At the end of five years, the boat will be sold and the proceeds split between the owners according to their share. When the yacht is not being used by its owners, it will be commercially chartered generating a revenue stream which is used to pay for the mooring, maintenance and management. If, as is likely, the revenues are greater than the costs, these profits will be paid to each owner as a dividend based upon the percentage owned. Obviously this has to be agreed with the other partners, and these discussions are a key part of your assessment of your potential partners, but you have more chance of getting what you want if you are in the discussions at the outset. The disadvantage is that the whole process of gathering partners, agreeing the contract, buying the asset and setting up the management and maintenance, can take longer than simply buying a share from an existing syndicate. But this may still be quicker than waiting for the perfect share to be offered for sale.
