Welcome to yours2share's June 2008 newsletter. In this edition:
Pure Latitude boat share club Over the last month I’ve had several conversations with Martin Gray who owns Pure Latitude boat share club, which is based at Hamble on the Solent in Hampshire. We have a fair amount in common: we both studied engineering at university, he lives near my parents near Hampton Court, and he’s passionate about the idea of sharing and making better use of expensive resources. Our biggest area of mutual interest is working out how to make people aware of the sharing options when they are looking to buy or hire/charter boats (or anything valuable), without spending a fortune on advertising. Pure Latitude uses the same model as car clubs or destination clubs (property). It offers members a range of boats, mainly sailing yachts, but there is also a rib and motor yacht. Members buy an annual quota of points with which they can “buy” or use of any of the boats on a daily basis. So far Pure Latitude has six boats: Beneteau First 27.7, Bavaria 31, Dufour 34, X Yachts 37, Rib 6.5 and a Swordsman 30. Pure Latitude manages and maintains them so their members just turn up and sail. Currently all their boats are on the Hamble, but Martin tells me that he wants to increase the Hamble fleet by a few more boats and then expand to other locations, including overseas. This means members will not only be able to sail a range of boats, but in a variety of locations. Given the growing popularity of car clubs and destination clubs, and the relative popularity of boat sharing, it seems strange to me that there aren’t several well established boat share clubs. But I can’t think of one and I’ve even hunted through Google. Most fractional sailing companies offer to build and manage syndicates who own one boat. Effectively Pure Latitude is offering members the opportunity to own a share in a range of boats. If there really aren’t any other players in this field, I have a feeling Martin won’t be on his own for long. Property share volunteers wanted for C4 TV series Channel 4 is making a new, prime-time, 4 part series about multi-generational households. They’re looking for large groups of families and/or friends and/or strangers who are planning to pool resources in order to buy, and live in, a dream property. The idea is that things such as childcare, finances, working life and leisure time all become easier if they are shared. It also means people can live in an amazing house that they would otherwise not be able to afford on their own.
