Greetings!

Welcome to yours2share's May 2008 newsletter. In this edition:
  • Second homes: not always for holidays
  • Sharing swimming pools
  • Speculative ads
Plus a selection of recent ads to whet your appetite.

Second homes: not always for holidays

Second home are usually synonymous with holiday homes, but people increasingly need residential bases in more than one location for other reasons:
  • working on contract
  • working from home but visiting the office for a couple of days a week
  • visiting children who live with the other parent
  • and visiting older relatives.
yours2share was created to help private individuals get together to share all kinds of things. People needed a way of finding each other, help with the contracts, and above all, awareness of the possibilities.

People are starting to realise that there are options beyond full ownership, permanent lodgings, hotels and sleeping on (increasingly irritated) friend's sofas.

This is exemplified by two recent yours2share ads. The first was from Yorkshire-based member who spends two or three nights a week in London. They seek a partner with whom to buy a London apartment. This is ideal for someone who spends a few nights a month in the capital or wants a City base for weekends. Here’s the ad in full.

A second ad was from a keen sailor, who is working two or three days a week in Southampton and wondering if he could rent a 40+ foot yacht for these nights and get some occasional evening sailing too. Given the vast numbers of boats lying idle in this area during the week, this is a great way of creating some income and having someone keep an eye on your boat. Here’s the ad in full.

Sharing swimming pools

Watch out for the latest yours2share sharing category, swimming pools, which will be available by the end of June. This category has developed as a result of my recent move to Norfolk. A conversation with a neighbour led me to explain what yours2share does. The response was "Oh, you mean like pool timeshare".

I've discovered several "pool timeshares" around Norwich. The owners of private swimming pools allow people to rent their pool fractionally for specific times each week, usually for half an hour or an hour, for various periods, usually three, six or twelve months. I was astonished. I thought "how did I miss this practice: it must be commonplace". Well it may be common, but only in Norfolk. If it’s common elsewhere, it is well hidden. I can't find any evidence of sharing pools anywhere else on the web.

I’ve also met local people who are looking for partners to help them build a swimming pool in their garden. Usually they are looking for (say) ten families who will each contribute to the building and maintenance costs in return for use of the pool for (say) half a day’s use a week for the next (say) fifteen years.

As usual the new category will be accompanied by extensive yours2share guidance and a template contract from Net Lawman: both are in progress. Once "swimming pools" are up and running, I’m considering similar categories for tennis courts and saunas.

If you have a private swimming pool (or tennis court or sauna) and are interested in finding people to rent it fractionally, please contact me.

Speculative ads

People often call me when they are considering posting an ad with yours2share and, because they can’t see an ad offering exactly what they want, they wonder if it is worth them posting an ad asking for someone to create a new syndicate, or sell them a share in something they already own. They assume no-one will be interested.

On the contrary, I’ve just done some analysis and speculative ads get an excellent response. Many replies result from people Google searching for words that lead them directly to the yours2share ad: there are few places people can advertise more unusual sharing opportunities. Other replies come from yours2share members who champion sharing: they see the ads and realise that either they, or someone they know, might be interested.

Human nature means we are all looking for the easiest option and replying to an ad is easier than posting an ad of your own. There is likely to be someone with a perfectly compatible requirement, you just have to find them. If you don't try, you will never know. Posting an ad is a relatively painless process and completely free, so it is always worth doing. You have nothing to lose.

If you need any help posting an ad (or working out whether want you are looking for makes sense!) please contact me.

And finally, here are a few of yours2share's recent ads that I really like: If you enjoyed reading our newsletter, please forward it to friends and colleagues.

We are always delighted to receive feedback.

Kind regards
