The Chair Weighs in on the 96th General Assembly:
Dear DuPage Dems,
With Illinois in
the midst of a serious financial crisis, the Republicans are geared up
for their finger-pointing campaign. They want us to forget that almost every other state (even those
with a Republican governor and legislature) is suffering, as we are in
Illinois, and forget that we're all in this mess because of 8 years of
the failed economic policies from the Bush/Cheney administration, the
Republicans will forge ahead with their spin that the Illinois Democrats
created the mess we're in. Harnessing their bad case of amnesia,
the DuPage Republicans will attempt to use the Illinois crisis to gain
an advantage in 2010.
It is our job to connect the dots for DuPage voters. Let's remind them that, in 2008, the Republicans
found themselves in a similar situation. Republican County Board Chair,
Bob Schillerstrom,
was faced with the task of asking DuPage voters to approve a tax
increase to plug a hole in a $40 million budget. Knowing that this
would not pass and that voters may see them/him as the real
tax-and-spend party, he enlisted the help of Republican Senators
Cronin, Dillard and Millner to go to the Democrats in Springfield and
ask for them to bail them out of a mess. The Democrats
allowed DuPage to increase the sales tax by .25% and avoid an
embarrassing defeat at the polls. Republicans in DuPage offered, at that time, NO other options but to slash the
budget (largely shutting out children and the elderly) if a tax
increase was not approved.
Now, in Springfield, these same Republicans, are opposing raising taxes to plug a hole in the state
budget and, again, offering no practical solutions for the problems they and the former administration
helped create. The message from the Republicans is clear: it's OK to
raise taxes if you do it quietly, let others help, and then develop
amnesia. But, when you get a chance to throw the Democrats under the
same bus that missed you, by all means do it.
We need your help to get out our message. We need your help to elect
Democrats to our county board and state offices. Please call us and let
us know you're willing to volunteer, become a member of the DuPage Democratic Party and join us at our fundraising events. Call us at 630-629-1125.
Bob Peickert, DPDC Chair

LEGISLATION WATCH:
HB4051 PASSES UNANIMOUSLY ON 5-21-09 Please thank Paul Froehlich (D-56)
|
HB 4051 passed unanimously in the Illinois Senate 57-0, finally ending a three-year power struggle regarding the DuPage Election Commission's destruction of OUR public records. Last month, the bill also passed unanimously in the Illinois House 117-0. Illinois Governor Pat Quinn is expected to sign the bill into law shortly.
EXCELLENT ARTICLE ON THIS ENTIRE PROCESS ON BRADBLOG. |

ACTION CORNER YES, WE STILL CAN

CALL FOR:
COUNTY BOARD MONITORING:
Several members of the Daytime Democrats have attended recent meetings of the DuPage County Board. HERE ARE SOME OF THEIR CONCERNS:
1. The meetings of the Board focus on the presentation of awards, voting on proposals, and the making of public comments. The "real" business is conducted in committee meetings that are held at pre-specified times. If you want to find out what really goes on in terms of discussion and debate of the issues and development of proposals, you need to attend the committee meetings.
2. The Board meetings are not "public friendly." The area is small and there is no identifiable space set aside for members of the public. No handouts or an agenda are provided to visitors. Board members are not identified so their names can be seen by the public. Microphones are not used by Board members so it is hard to hear. Instructions as to how to address the Board or otherwise participate in the process are not readily available.
3. The Daytime Democrats were astounded to learn of the high salaries earned by Board members (over $70,000, including benefits) for which they are required by contract to work five hours a week. Furthermore, no methods of accountability are in place or other means available to determine if Board members are doing their job.
