SUBJECT: Team Insurance Program

It’s been a challenging couple of years for our insurance carriers and our insurance program.  Two factors have had substantial negative impacts on the loss ratios of our policies:

  1. As the result of the difficult economic climate of the last four years, considerably fewer families have Primary Medical Insurance.  As you probably know, the Pop Warner Medical/Accident Insurance is written as secondary coverage, but it becomes primary when the injured participant is not covered by primary insurance.

In the past two-three years, the percentage of Claims which result in our coverage being Primary have escalated dramatically, which means significantly higher amounts of claim funds paid.

  2. Our cheer squads/dance squads have never paid any premiums at all – even for multiple squads with one football team.  Injury rates, and claims, are approximately the same currently for spirit participants as for football players on a per capita basis.

These two factors combined require two things: 1) premium increases for football teams, and 2) separate premiums for cheer and/or dance squads.

We carefully considered including a deductible for the first time in over 20 years.  Realistically, a $250 deductible reduced the rates only very slightly since so few claims fall in that range.  A deductible of $500 did make a noticeable decrease in the rates, but would be onerous on the families of any injured participants.  Therefore, our coverage remains at a $-0- deductible.

To insure that our insurance program is the optimal combination of coverage and premium, we bid out the entire insurance program this year.  All carriers responding were in similar price ranges.

We’re confident in our program with Chartis. We know it’s as competitive as possible given our loss ratios of the past number of years.  We hope you understand the reasons for the increase.  Know that we examine and review the program annually and will continue to provide the best coverage at the best possible rates.
