First Look: Three New Lower Level Meeting Rooms

The Waco Convention Center renovation is really moving along. We got our first peek at the three new meeting rooms on the lower level. The metal stud framing for the walls has been erected, next to come will be sheet rock and door frames.

One of these new meeting rooms being built is where the Convention Center offices used to be, and will stay booked a great deal because it is right in the middle of everything. It's a useful size: about 1,100 square feet.

The other two new meeting rooms are being built in what used to be the garage area, to the right of the Ranger Rooms. These rooms will be carpeted and will be ideal for additional breakout space. They are 1,600 sq. ft. each, which is about the size of two Ranger Rooms put together.

Chisholm Hall Facelift

Chisholm Hall is getting a facelift! All the fur-downs along the sides are partially covered with a mesh that will hold new, neutral-colored acoustic panels. The balcony is now enclosed so that that end of the hall looks more seamless. The balcony will be used for equipment storage, which will not be visible to clients.

New Sunlit Room - main level

If you have ever entered the Convention Center from the 3rd St. entrance, just off the Chisholm Hall loading ramp, you'll recall that entire side is constructed with thick glass tiles. One of the entrances on that side will be enclosed to create a small new meeting room. This room will be bathed in light from the glass tiles facing the outdoors. It stays relatively cool even in the heat of summer because of the thickness of the glass tiles.

DeCordova Room and Bosque Theatre

Speaking of the DeCordova Room, it's completely gutted, along with the Bosque Theatre. The crews have taken it down to the concrete slab. These rooms will be switched and will be under renovation for the longest period.

Room Availability

Currently, the Brazos Ballroom and Cameron Room are available for rental. On June 1, 2010, Chisholm Hall is scheduled to become available again. On July 1, 2010, McLennan Hall comes back online.

Freedom Fountain

Outdoors, the Freedom Fountain still stands, but both the circular benches and the walkway surrounding it have been removed. It is now surrounded by raw earth.

Escalators and new

service elevators

Deep pits have been dug for the new escalator and the two new service elevators. The escalator will be where the main staircase used to be. The new service elevators are in areas that are out of sight to the public.
