Webinar: When IT Fails: A Business Novel
webinar

Join us on August 16th, 11am ET, for this month's "webucation"

Gene Kim, founder of IT Revolution Press, Author of The Visible Ops Handbook, and founder and former CTO of Tripwire, Inc., presents:

When IT Fails: A Business Novel is the culmination of 10+ years of researching and benchmarking over 1,500 IT organizations.

The novel tells the story of Parts Unlimited, a 100 year old, $4B/year company at the brink of failure. To keep the organization in operation, the CEO and team must close the gap with the competition. The two most critical projects have a high reliance on IT and are both years late and way over budget....

August 8th is National Dollar Day
We've heard the expression "the buck stops here," but where did the buck start in the first place? Well it started on August 8, 1786, when Congress established the U.S. monetary system.  Of course back then the dollar could probably buy you a horse and now you're lucky if it gets you a pack of gum, but that's a discussion for another time.  For now, just be happy for every dollar you have in your pocket, and every dollar that may come your way.

To celebrate National Dollar Day, we are offering a special promotion! When you buy one seat to the August 28-30 Foundation class in Fort Lauderdale, you can get another seat for only one dollar.  The offer is valid until August 24, 2012.

Register here using the code DOLLAR.  Registration will reserve 2 seats in class, and we will contact you for the 2nd learner name.
Jayne Explains:
Don't Drink the Kool-Aid!
Jayne Groll

Have you ever heard someone talk about "drinking the Kool-Aid"?  If you "drink the Kool-Aid", you buy into a new concept, initiative or way of doing things.    In our space, it is often used to describe an individual's acceptance of new or improved service management processes by drinking the "ITIL Kool-Aid".

I am not sure how the concept entered into our common vocabulary, but it has terrible origins... Read More

Mercury in Retrograde - Seriously!

Have you been dealing with a rash of technology-related problems lately that you've labeled as 'weird,' or frustrating, or just plain annoying? Have your travels been delayed due to mechanical problems with your car or with a flight? Have you , or have those around you  crankier than normal and it's not clear why? Have you been the victim of miscommunication?

Good news! The end is in sight. All of the occurrences above are symptoms of the fact that Mercury has been in retrograde since July 14, with the current period coming to an end August 7-8.

In astrology, Mercury is the planet that represents communication and motion. When Mercury goes retrograde there is a sense that movement-based things - such as communication, travel, traffic or business negotiations - are interrupted and slowed. During this three week period we often experience Murphy's Law - if something can go wrong, it will. To make matters worse, those things typically go wrong when we can least afford it as we're trying to get somewhere or we're trying to get things done.

And therein lies the problem... In astrology, Mercury retrograde is a time for reviewing where we are. Generally speaking, if we try to move forward on things, it will feel like the universe is fighting us. Astrologers suggest, for example, that if it is at all possible you avoid starting new projects, scheduling meetings to make big decisions, signing legal documents, or installing new software.

Again, there's good news! This is a great time to research new opportunities and to gather and share information. It's also a great time to return to and wrap old projects as you can now see them in a new light (i.e., reap the benefits of retrospection and lessons learned). It's even a good time to catch up on paperwork.

In general, it's a time when we're all encouraged to be patient, watch where we're going, strive for clarity when communicating, and go with the flow!

The Third Week in August is National Air Conditioning Appreciation Week, and appreciating your air conditioner can get very costly! We wanted to share a list with you on ways to save money on your air conditioning costs.  This way you can appreciate your air conditioner all summer long.

  • When buying a window air conditioning unit, more is not necessarily better. Base the size of the air conditioning unit on the size of the room, the other factors that affect the temperature in the room, such as how many windows it has and whether it faces south, north, etc. An air conditioning unit that is too big for the room will work harder and cost you more.
  •

  • When you're shopping for a central air conditioning system, make sure the SEER number (seasonal energy efficiency ratio) is 13 or better (14 in warmer climates). A less efficient system will cost you more to run. Look for an EER (energy efficiency ratio) of 11 or higher for room air conditioners. A high efficiency unit costs more, but if you live in a hot climate, it will pay for itself in a few years by reducing electricity bills.
  •

  • Perform regular maintenance on your air conditioning unit. Replace the filter monthly during the cooling season and have a professional service your system at the beginning of each cooling season.
