70th Anniversary
of the Publication of
Pumpkin Moonshine

Pumpkin Moonshine

It was 70 years ago this month that Pumpkin Moonshine first went on sale.  Pumpkin Moonshine was published September 15, 1938.  Jersey City Printing Company completed the printing April 1st of that year, and Brownworth & Co. of New York City completed the binding on September 15.  Henry Walck provided the copyright application and affidavit to the Library of Congress September 21, and 2 copies of the book were received on September 22.  Arcane facts perhaps, but they help us understand a little more of this first outing by Tasha Tudor as author/illustrator. We do not know how many copies were ordered in the first printing.

The book has endured.  It went on to become the iconic cornerstone of many Tasha Tudor collections.  If one doesn't have a copy of Pumpkin Moonshine, then a collection can never reflect the full range of Tudor's output.   The book has been reprinted by Henry Z. Walck, David McKay, the Jenny Wren Press, Random House, and currently by Simon & Schuster.
HENRY Z. WALCK,
 OXFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS,
AND
 TASHA TUDOR

Henry Ziegler Walck's grandfather manufactured grain cradles in Greencastle, Pa., for many years up to 1928.   As a young boy, Walck was a true "whistle blower" at the plant.   His grandfather let him pull the noon time whistle signaling workers to go home for lunch.  As a young college graduate, Walck was associated with Putnam's and Prentice-Hall before joining Oxford University Press in 1936.  See www.greencastlemuseum.org/Local_History/walck.htm for more details.

Henry Z. Walck (1908-1984) was Tasha Tudor's first publisher (a person) at Oxford University Press, Inc. New York (a company).  Eunice Blake is often mentioned as the young editor who began her career when she took Tudor's Pumpkin Moonshine manuscript as her first project (1938).  But it is Henry Z. Walck's name that appears on the copyright certificate.  He filed copyright notices with the Library of Congress as an employee of Oxford in New York.

Oxford (i.e., Walck the man) and Tudor continued to work together publishing books for 20 years.  Walck was President of the US branch of the company from 1948 until late 1957.  At that time, Oxford divested its line of children's books in this country.  Henry Walck left Oxford, purchased its children's book division (copyright to about 250 titles) and soon began to reprint these books under his own company name - Henry Z. Walck, Inc.

Some of Tasha Tudor's books were included in this reprinting activity.  This is why the early Calico books appeared in a larger format in the 1960s indicating they were published by Walck, two decades after their original publication.  They are reprints.

The obfuscating part of this corporate transition is that Walck cites the original copyright date thus:   © Henry Z. Walck, Inc.  1942.   This is a fallacious statement on its face because Walck the company did not exist until 1957.   But because Walck the man headed OUP and had handled authors, titles and copyright forms, he seems to have felt that he did indeed copyright the book in 1942.   And said so. Thus confusing Tudor collectors about the age and nature of their books.   One presumes the same muddying of the waters applies to other Oxford children's books published before 1958.  There was never a statement linking the earlier publication with the reprints.

More Prayers (1967) is the only Tudor title Henry Z. Walck, Inc. published as a first edition.

Walck did not reprint all of Tudor's Oxford titles.  The ones he missed are some of the most sought after and collectible of Tudor's early books.  Titles such as Snow Before Christmas, The White Goose, Edgar Allan Crow and Amanda and the Bear were only published by Oxford University Press, New York, Inc.

Walck continued with his own company until 1973 when he retired and sold it (and its stable of titles) to the publisher  David McKay.  Tasha Tudor's Sampler is a compilation of 3 stories published with the McKay imprint.

AN INTERESTING PROVISION
            FROM TASHAS TUDOR'S WILL

Genealogists spend much time hunting and gleaning probated wills for clues to ancestors' lives.   Ms Tudor's last will and testament will soon join that mother lode of research information.   The will is currently in the probate court of Windham County, Vermont.   Among Tasha's other bequests and directives is:

Part Twelfth:  I direct that my body be cremated and my ashes be buried, together with the ashes of my predeceased dogs and the ashes of my pet rooster, "Chickahominy," should he predecease me, under the "Mystery Rose" in my garden.   I further direct that there be no funeral or viewing.

The mystery rose was one which Ms Tudor planted, but could never identify.

Tasha Tudor and Family, Inc. has announced a public memorial service to be held at the Adams Farm, Wilmington, Vermont, on the evening of Friday September 12, 6:45-8:30 pm.   They say "We'll take a short walk to the pond where there will be a brief ceremony. Those who wish may take part in floating candles on the pond in the twilight. After this ceremony, you may continue to reminisce around the beautiful bonfire.  There is no charge for admittance, but you do need to reserve a spot ahead of time by calling 802.257.4444.  We'll begin taking reservation on Tuesday, September 2nd.
