Bibliographies are the roadmaps through the vast forest of printed information. If you are a serious collector of John Steinbeck's novels, or the plays of James M. Barrie, the definitive bibliography of each of these men's published works becomes your guide. A bibliography reports all of an author's publications, with physical descriptions of the various pieces. There is generally a chronological table listing titles by publication date.
Tasha Tudor: The Direction of Her Dreams is a 550-page guide to Tudor's published books. The body of the book describes some 1200 different editions and printings of Tudor books, books by her husband and daughters Bethany and Efner - and things that look like books. There were some of the latter. The descriptions are extremely detailed, identifying special markings of first editions, colors of binding cloth, exact wording of dust jacket text, price and ISBNs. Many publishers did not specify a print number on the first edition of their books, let alone subsequent appearances. Oxford University Press and J. B. Lippincott were pretty good about doing so. As a further bonus, Tasha Tudor: The Direction of her Dreams identifies all the Nell Dorr photographs in Mother and Child (1954 & 1972).
A knowledgeable Tudor collector needs to understand the difference between Oxford and Walck printings. The bibliography includes introductory essays by Tudor's 2 daughters, 2 of her editors writing of their time with Tudor and our own essays synopsizing some of the vagaries of identifying Tudor's books. Finally, there is a separate 50-page bibliography listing periodical articles. This covers all the articles in Victoria, the Hornbook, and reviews from the New York Times Book Review, the Boston Globe and other newspapers. These articles are mostly about Tudor, but some were written or illustrated by her. Most are quite obscure and not readily found in your local library.
The Hare and Hare book is the one to last the ages and serve as the scholarly cornerstone for students of Tudor's work. Available to borrow in most college libraries as well as through inter-library loan at your local public library. |
