Did You Know?
In the mid 1930's a great, yet secret, effort was underway in Russia to build an aircraft that would be invisible to the human eye.  Using the latest in high tech materials, and a little out-of-the-box thinking, the aircraft was successfully developed and test flown in late 1935.

So, what does an invisible plane look like?  Click the image below to read the full article and view the accompanying images.

Ponderings in Proverbs
Excerpts from the Lamplighter Blog

In Proverbs 19:14, Solomon writes, "House and riches are inherited from fathers, but a prudent wife is from the LORD."

Like most proverbs, this is a contrasting thought. A man works hard to leave an inheritance to his children and his children's children. This is a gift and a worthy gift given from a man to his children. God gives gifts as well to his children. And one that rivals an inheritance
is a prudent wife.

There are so many thoughts that rush to my mind. One that we need to prepare our daughters to be prudent, so that the Lord has many gifts to give. He does not work outside of our cooperation with Him. In the same thought, our boys need to be taught to work hard to leave an inheritance to their children and grandchildren. Proverbs 13:22 says,"A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children..."

As I ponder this verse about the prudent wife, another thought comes to mind: a prudent wife supports her husband so that he is able to leave such security to his family and future generations. She is his counter part; she supports his endeavors, encourages him, speaks the truth to him, prays for him, and patiently waits for him to fulfill God's plan for his life and his family's. So many men flounder in life; it is a prudent wife who sees her supportive role in encouraging him...it is true that behind every great man is a great or greater woman.

Laughter is Like Medicine

A gambler and a mild mannered elderly lady are sitting next to each other on a long flight. The gambler is thinking that the nice lady might be easy prey for a newly devised scheme of making money. So the gambler asks if the lady would like to play a fun game. The lady is tired and just wants to take a nap, so she politely declines and tries to catch a few winks. The gambler persists, and says that the game is a lot of fun. "I ask you a question, and if you don't know the answer, you pay me only $5; you ask me one, and if I don't know the answer, I will pay you $500," he says. This catches the lady's attention and to keep the gambler quiet, she agrees to play the game.

The Economy
by Cal Thomas

A few weeks ago, The Washington Post carried a story that is a metaphor for what ails us. It was about a Maryland couple whose mortgage lender took back what remained of a $95,000 home equity line of credit. The lender explained that the couple's home had fallen in value and it did not want to shoulder the risk that they might owe more than the house was worth. The couple was using the equity line to pay preschool tuition for their twins.

A good financial adviser might have helped them avoid this predicament, but we are immediately led to the supposedly bottomless well of the federal government. Politicians, especially some of our newly elected leaders, pledge to shoulder the responsibility of making sure that people whose mortgages are higher than they can reasonably afford and whose debts are larger than they should be get bailed out by the rest of us who made right financial decisions and practice living within our means. I know, this sounds cold, but only to those who live this way.

Desperate Hope

Hello Mark,

I heard you speak at a recent conference.  So many things you talked about were things that applied to me.  I have always been very controlling as a parent and have a very difficult time embracing grace in the way I treat my family.  I have four children and they are all so different. Since coming to the conference I have read Families Where Grace is in Place, and The Education of a Child by Fenelon.  I am trying to not be critical and trying to get "out of my daughter's face," but it seems that we are constantly battling attitudes that I feel have to do with our relationship, but I can't figure out how to change.  She will often respond to almost anything I say with hanging her head, being down on herself for not being "perfect," and making lots of derogatory remarks about herself. It is heart wrenching for me to hear because I feel responsible yet also helpless to proceed.  She has a very difficult time staying focused when doing school work or even things like brushing her teeth, and when I try to remind her to keep going, she will be tearfully exasperated with how overwhelming life is.  Her desperate feelings really scare me sometimes, and I want to do whatever I can to make sure her life is as carefree as it should be for an 8-year-old, but I seem to be missing it!  It seems like I don't know how I can help her change anything in either school (we homeschool) or daily life without coming across as critical and her feeling put down.  Is there any advice you can give me that could help me change the way I relate to my daughter?  I am getting pretty desperate myself.  My husband has a hard time realizing what is going on since she responds to him in a totally different way.  It may or may not make a difference that she and I are very different.  My daughter is very artistic, has musical abilities, loves crafts -- all things I can't relate to very well. I would really appreciate your input.

Thanks so much.

Dialogues of Fenelon
Chapter 2:
The Need of Devotion in a Worldly Life

It seems to me, Madame, that you have two things to do,-one with respect to your engagements, the other with respect to yourself. The first consists in the care you should take to redeem some brief time from the world for reading and prayer. Try to rescue half an hour morning and evening. You must learn, too, to make good use of chance moments, when waiting for some one, when going from place to place, or when in society, where to be a good listener is all that is required. more...

Glaucia, the Greek Slave

Coming in Early 2009!

Glaucia, the Greek Slave traces the history of an Athenian girl, Glaucia.  Sold into slavery to pay off her father's debt, it is up to her brother, Leon, to free her and discover the truth of their mother's mysterious disgrace.  Little do they know that the events that will bring them in contact with this strange new sect of Christians will change their lives forever!
The combination of historic events, intriguing plot and life-like characters make this a truly worthwhile read.  All will be encouraged by the example and witness of these two courageous young Christians.  There are some authors whose characters seem as marble statues of perfection, beautiful but unattainable; other characters are alive and vibrant, spurring the reader on toward excellence.  Glaucia and Leon belong to the latter group.  More then the characters, however, the reader will be impressed by the obvious working of God's sovereignty in their lives.  It is so exciting to see how every event, even the seeming setbacks, work together for "the good of those who love him."

REVIEW

I loved it, especially as I got toward the end of the book. I think it would be a great book for kids age 8 through 15 to learn about Ancient Rome and the persecution of the Christians then. It is perhaps the best of all our historical fiction from the ancient era for that younger age -- not that older readers wouldn't or couldn't enjoy it -- but the horrors of slavery and the ugliness of that time period are just a bit softened, as opposed to Titus, Stephen, Wrestler.

Rescued From Egypt
Rescued from Egypt

In this, the third volume in the Heroes of Faith Series, the life and deliverance of Moses as a type and shadow of the coming Redeemer is flawlessly incorporated into the story of Arthur, the main character. Arthur wrestles with the inner conflict of living for himself and the approval of others or living for Christ in spite of the rejection and ridicule he'll most likely endure, for he is related to his siblings by blood, but not by the blood of Christ. The characters are realistic and the story is captivating, but the
best part is the dramatic, awesome ending!
