Ponderings in Proverbs
Proverbs 10 is chuck full of rich truths. Here are some of them:
"The Lord does not let the righteous go hungry." "but the hand of the diligent makes rich." My fear about the current economic crisis is not that we might enter a great depression, but that we might rebound from this and forget again that God is trying to give America a wake up call. If the markets rebound relatively quickly, it will be business as usual and most will forget what is truly important -- that God wants us to return to Him with our entire lives. He wants to work with us and through us to bring redemption to a lost world. From witnessing the tragedies of 911, Katrina, floods, fires, natural disasters and the present economic crisis, we might ask, "Is God slowly retracting His hand of protection from our country?" Only when God's people humble themselves and pray and turn from their wicked ways, will he hear from heaven, forgive our sin, and heal our land.
Proverbs 10 also gives us that amazing truth that "Hatred stirs up strife, but love covers all offenses." It just doesn't get more powerful than that. Love just doesn't fail; love redeems our relationships. Solomon goes on with his Proverbs in chapter 10 and says, "Whoever heeds instruction is on the path of life, but he who rejects reproof leads others astray."
And this next one is one of my all-time favorites: "When words are many, transgression is not lacking, but whoever restrains his lips is wise." I like the way one modern version quotes this, "Where there is much talk there will be no end to sin, but he who keeps his mouth shut does wisely." If only we could just keep the mouth closed, God would be free to do His redeeming work through us. We get in the way so often.
Lastly, "the blessing of the LORD makes rich, and he adds no sorrow with it. What the wicked dreads will come upon him, but the desire of the righteous will be granted." In light of the days in which we live, these are powerful truths. I love the idea that God adds no sorrow with prosperity when it comes through His blessing. When a person can enjoy wealth because he knows that it is solely a blessing that comes from God, there will be no sorrow or no frustration added to your life. When there is fear, frustration and friction, it is evidence that we may have forgotten the Source of the blessing.

A Word from Our Readers
As many of you may remember, the October issue of the Lamplighter Newsletter contained two statements that alarmed some of our readers and may have caused them to question our position on Creation. We received numerous e-mails communicating this concern, so we followed up with a short note of apology and clarification to reassure you that we faithfully adhere solely to Biblical teaching and do not hold any belief contrary to the Word of God. Here are some of the responses we received from our readers regarding both the original e-mail and our apology. We thank you for being involved so actively in our ministry and always appreciate your input.

Effects of Violence on Televisionby Mark Hamby
_________________________________________
As I pulled into the parking lot of Walgreen's pharmacy, I noticed someone walking toward the store wearing a ski mask and sun glasses. When you travel as much as I do, nothing surprises you in regard to the way people dress. So I didn't think much of it as I entered the store to buy my long-awaited throat lozenges.
My first thought was that this might possibly turn out to be an interesting night, but my quest for throat lozenges far outweighed the thought of avoiding a possible armed robbery. Upon entering, I said to the clerk, "There is an unsavory character behind me; you might want to check him out." As I spoke, in walked the masked man.
I proceeded to search for my throat lozenges with a surreal sense of danger. Was this really a robbery or just the clerk's friend playing a joke? I decided to take a closer look. I stood motionless, watching a robbery in progress. The robber turned and saw me. I walked back to the pharmacist and told him to call 911. He hid me in a room with a glass door and locked me inside. The gunman proceeded to walk toward us. I hid behind the door and watched as the robber emptied another register while holding the gun to the clerk's side.
Soon the police arrived yelling, "Drop the gun!" After the third command, the police shot the gunman in the head. As it turned out, the gunman was a twenty-year-old female, and the weapon was a toy gun. This personal experience is but a glimpse at the hard reality that our world is filled with aggression and violence. What would lead a young woman to act out of such desperation?

When the Jordan Overflows by Mark Hamby
I don't know about you, but I always hated taking tests, especially when they revealed how unprepared I was. But I realize now that I will be tested for the rest of my life. Jeremiah 12:3-5 is one of my favorite portions of Scripture:
"But you, O LORD, know me; you see me, and test my heart toward you... If you have raced with men on foot, and they have wearied you, how will you compete with horses? And if in a safe land you are so trusting, what will you do when the Jordan overflows?" I pray that the Lord will lead me not into temptation but deliver me from evil, almost every day. But if I must walk through tumultuous waters, I need to prepare for the test that lies ahead. "Blessed is the man that endures temptation, for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord has promised to them that love him." (James 1:12) I don't do well with tests, but I know that God's tests reveal the state of my heart. Jeremiah understood this, as is evident when he says, "If you have raced with men on foot, and they have wearied you..." In other words, if the people we know and love are getting under our skin, how will we be able to handle the difficult tests when they come? If we are coasting during the relatively smooth times in life, what will we do when the waters of life begin to swallow us?

Chapter 1: On Meditation and Prayer
Read over the subject of your meditation, either in the Bible or whatever book you may be using. Pause, after a verse or two, to follow out such reflections as God may suggest. Consider how Jesus Christ practised the truth or the precept which He is teaching you; how those faithful souls whom you yourself know are practising it; how the world neglects it; how you have departed from it, and why. Then lay your shame before God, prostrating yourself before Him in the solitude of your closet. Then reflect upon the occasions which cause you to commit these faults, and the best means of avoiding and remedying them; what the Lord justly requires of you, that you may keep from such falls, and repair the past; pray Him to fill your heart with all that He would see in it; ask Him to strengthen the determination to improve, which He has given you; trust in His goodness, and in His solemn promises never to forsake us in time of need; and rest in the hope that He will finish the good work which He has begun in you.

Rescued from Egypt
Coming Soon!

In this, the third volume in the Heroes of Faith Series, the
life and deliverance of Moses as a type and shadow of the coming
Redeemer is flawlessly incorporated into the story of Arthur, the main
character. Arthur wrestles with the inner conflict of living for
himself and the approval of others or living for Christ in spite of the
rejection and ridicule he'll most likely endure, for he is related to
his siblings by blood, but not by the blood of Christ. The characters
are realistic and the story is captivating, but the best part is the
dramatic, awesome ending!

Wisdom Quotes
"In my view, the Christian religion is the most important and one of the first things in which all children, under a free government ought to be instructed... No truth is more evident to my mind than that the Christian religion must be the basis of any government intended to secure the rights and privileges of a free people."
- Noah Webster From the preface to his 1828 dictionary

Worth Remembering Scripture Memorization

Psalm 145:18,19
The Lord is near to all who call upon Him; to all who call upon Him in truth. He fulfills the desire of those who fear him. He also hears their cry and saves them.
