Free Tax Prep Service Helps More Families Than Ever

Preliminary results show free tax preparation helped families claim $200,000 more in refunds this year than last.

"This was my first time in 10 years having to file taxes by myself and I was completely in the dark as to what to expect and what to do," said Keisha, who used the services of Increasing H.O.P.E. "The volunteers were truly amazing in assisting me with filing my taxes AND educating me on the process."

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is a partnership among Trident United Way, Charleston Trident Urban League, the IRS and several other corporate and nonprofit partners. It provides free tax preparation services and asset-building education to lower income families in Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties.

Health

Eat Smart Move More

Trident United Way has taken a leadership role in the Wings Kids stretchingarea-wide healthy lifestyle coalition Eat Smart Move More.

The coalition's goal is to promote nutrition and exercise and to reduce the incidence of preventable chronic diseases -- like diabetes, stroke, and heart disease -- in the Lowcountry.
