Report On the Boy Scouts                      August 2010
From: Lonnie Carter, CEO Santee Cooper
Board Chair, Trident United Way

Bill Moody, Community Investment Chair,
Trident United Way

As Chairman of Trident United Way's Board of Directors and Trident United Way's Community Impact Committee, respectively, we wanted you to have all the facts concerning Trident United Way's (TUW) relationship with the ScoutReach program of The Coastal Carolina  Council, Boy Scouts of America.

It is not typical that TUW comments publicly on programs that it does not fund. However the Boy Scouts are engaged in a systematic campaign to discredit TUW's outcome-focused grant making process and to seek direct contributions through our campaign. This requires us to state our position publicly, particularly since no one at the Boy Scouts has contacted either of us.

TUW demands high levels of fiscal accountability and program measurement from all the programs that we fund. That is the "value add" and the reason that so many people like you support TUW.

The attached fact sheetis an accurate chronological description of the way TUW volunteers went through our difficult decision-making process. For decades TUW has funded the Boy Scouts' ScoutReach program. We have great admiration and support of the many wonderful Boy Scout volunteers who make scouting available to kids in our community.

If you have questions or comments you can always contact us or Chris Kerrigan, President and CEO, Trident United Way at ckerrigan@tuw.org.
