What's Happening at Ego's!

Gary planting

Ever wonder what we might be doing during the snowy months before spring finally arrives?  (No, is doesn't include months of sitting on a beach in Mexico!)  We are, however, planning, repairing, sowing seeds and planting those little seedlings and cuttings that will become flowering baskets, vegetable transplants, and hardy perennials for the spring and summer.

We've added a new section to our website called "What's Happening" where we'll be posting photos of what goes on behind-the-scenes at Ego's throughout the seasons.  Check in regularly for updates on how things are growing in the greenhouse, nursery and in the field.

TRENDWATCH:
Colour Trends for 2009

Hemerocallis Going BananasHOPE is the official colour of the year, that is, the colour of hope.  Yellow is the colour of hope, warmth, radiant optimism, and positive energy.  Pantone calls it Mimosa Yellow (Pantone 14-0848), Michelle Obama's inauguration dress designer calls it lemongrass.  Whatever you call it, yellow in all shades from honey to lemon to sweet orange-yellow is hot this year.  Look for it to show up on items everywhere from home accents to patio furniture and 'Going Bananas'  daylilies in the garden. Nature's Palette
While yellow is a bright and cheerful accent colour, it is even more effective when paired with the grounded colours of nature: sky blue, citrus green, sandy tan, and weathered grey.  All will be in popular for 2009, along with the amethyst and plum purple shades found in perennial lavender, delphiniums, and clematis vines.

It's no coincidence that the colour trends for 2009 echo those commonly found in nature, often right in our own backyards.  During the past few years, the concept of "eco-chic" has surged in popularity and that trend will continue to blossom through 2009.  Aided by a new wave of social consciousness, this trend looks to continue for some time.
