The MARKET SHOP Is Going To The Birds!

The Market Shop has just received a shipment of unique bird houses and top quality feeders that are sure to attract new feathered friends to your garden.
Birdhouses by April Gregory are distinctive for their reuse of old building materials and antique accents. Each birdhouse sports an old metal ceiling tile for a roof and many have old maple syrup spigots as perches as old doorknobs as accents. The houses are designed to be used by cavity nesting birds such as finches and have removeable sides for easy clean-out at the end of the season. Each house is an original and makes a wonderful gift!
New birdfeeders from Wilderness Fred's are also available at the shop. Finch feeders for nyger and sunflower seeds, as well as top quality hummingbird and oriole feeders, will soon have birds flocking to your backyard.

Shade Loving Perennial Adds Glorious Colour to Your Garden
Astilbes are long-lived perennials that are most comfortable when grown in rich soil and light shade to filtered sun. Prized by gardeners for being one of the few blooming shade loving perennials, they brighten any dark corner of the garden with their delicate plumes of flowers. They will grow in full shade, but will not bloom as prolifically there. Though they are easy to grow, Astilbes have one critical requirement--lots of water. Plants must have consistently moist soil; dryness leads to a quick demise, especially in sun. Increase watering as the foliage emerges and the plumes mature. If the soil dries out, the leaves will develop brown, crispy margins and will begin to drop. Fertilize Astilbes in late spring before flowering starts. Wait to cut back the old foliage until spring; it will help protect the plant from winter damage. In the spring, if the crown has risen above soil level, gently press it back into the ground and apply some organic matter around the plant. Plants should be divided in early spring every 3-4 years to maintain vigor.
Ego's has a large selection of Astilbes in bloom - this is the perfect time to pick your favourite to add a splash of colour to your shady border. Astilbe are available in 1 gal pots for $9.95. |
