TIPS FROM THE PRO It's all in the set-up!
Last month we talked about the importance of developing a proper golf grip, and mentioned that this, along with set-up and posture were the fundamental elements in your golf game. This month I want to talk about shot set-up and all that entails.
It seems obvious that you can't expect to hit a target if you are aiming in the wrong direction, and the same can be said about your golf shot. If you don't set-up your shot properly you have little hope of hitting it in the direction you want.
There are a number of key elements that you need to address in regards to shot set-up. Alignment, balance, posture and ball position are all closely related in ensuring that you make the most effective shot you can.
Alignment Your body, which includes your feet, knees, hips, arms, shoulders and eyes, should be in parallel alignment to your target line. Many professionals often suggest you imagine a railway track, with the outer rail a straight line between your club face and the target, and the inner rail where you would line up your feet.
Foot Position Your feet should be approximately shoulder width apart, with your front foot angled slightly toward the target and your back foot relatively square. This is the ideal position for your feet when using your middle irons. For short irons your feet should have a slightly narrower stance and for long irons and woods your stance should be slightly wider than shoulder width apart.
Ball Position Positioning your golf ball correctly relative to your stance is fundamental to a great shot. The positioning of your ball varies depending on the club you are using. When using your driver or long irons your ball should be slightly forward in your stance, opposite the inside of your lead heel. For short irons it makes more sense to position the ball further back in your stance, midway between your feet.
Balance Make sure that your weight is balanced on the balls of your feet not on your heels and toes. For short irons your weight should be balanced slightly more towards your target foot, for middle irons it should be balanced equally between both feet, and for your longer clubs slightly more towards your back foot.
Posture Good posture helps ensure a good approach to your swing. Start by standing upright with your club resting by your side. Bend forward from your hips (not your waist), since your spine acts as the axis of rotation for your swing. Then reach for your club without altering your angles as you address the club, and use your favourite grip (overlapping, interlocking or baseball grip).
As always, don't hesitate to talk to any of our CPGA professionals for some advice.
Yours in golf, Kevin Purcell CPGA Professional

GOLF DICTIONARY: "Waggle"
"Waggle" refers to the movement of the club head prior to swinging. While not a necessity for a correct swing, many consider it an option that helps start the back-swing momentum and use it as a means to promote a relaxed swing! Experiment with it a little and see if it works for you! |
GOLF ETIQUETTE: Tee Box
The tee box is considered the stage where every golfer has their turn to shine. It is important that golfers choose the correct tee for their skill level, no matter where the other golfers in their party are playing from. The different tee positions help even out the playing field for golfers of different playing abilities.
Etiquette dictates that:
- all other golfers remain quiet when a golfer is in the tee box
- tee your ball evenly with or behind the two markers in the tee box & within two club-lengths behind them
- if you swing and miss, it counts as one stroke
- if you knock the ball off the tee during a practice swing, you are allowed to re-tee without incurring a penalty
- other golfers should stand out of the golfer's line of vision (and that includes your shadow)
- all golfers in the party should watch the shot as it leaves the tee-box (not all golfers like to watch their balls land, especially if it's a bad shot).

Girls Just Want to Have Fun!
Wanted: Girls aged 7-18 years for our GIRLS ONLY CLUB!
If you know a young lady between the ages of 7 and 18 years, we'd love to have her join us for our "girls only" activities!
It has long been the challenge of golf professionals to introduce young girls to the game of golf and keep them interested as they get older. One of the hurdles has been finding playing partners for the girls, because we know they don't always want to play with the guys!
Our Girls Only Club is designed just for girls! The Girls Only Club is scheduled to run every other Tuesday evening from 6:30 to 7:30 pm for a total of 5 sessions, under the direction of our CPGA Assistant Golf Pro, Paul Bonenfant. Registration fee of $115 includes a one-hour golf lesson each session, hat, bag tag, tee pack, Girls Club passport (to track progress), and a guide to golf rules & etiquette. On alternate Tuesday evenings, our Girls Only Club members are invited to play golf on Ladies Night for only $15. Minimum registration is 10 golfers. We know "girls rule" so let's see it on the course!
