Greetings!
After a long, wet and cold month, it looks like we will finally be getting some great golf weather! Leo fired up the new irrigation system on Friday and he is very excited about the course conditions for this summer. With the cool May temperatures the new 17th green has been growing slowly but we are still targeting July 1st to get the new hole in play. The cart path was just paved last week!
Our Ladies Night Open House on May 6th was a resounding success. Over 50 new ladies have joined the program and as a result we have incorporated tiered instruction on Tuesday nights in order to accommodate the numbers. We continually get great feedback on our ladies program...it's casual, fun and our CPGA team offers great instruction for golfers at all levels. We always welcome new additions so call and reserve your space up to one week in advance.
With Father's Day just a few weeks away, be sure to drop by our Pro Shop and check out our new arrivals. Kevin has some interesting Father's Day promotions in the Pro Shop and gift cards are always available. Or, give the gift of time and invite your Dad for a round of golf at the course. After your game, treat him to a great meal from Chef Mike's new menu!
Name our restaurant! We want to give our restaurant a new name. Send us your suggestions by May 31st, and we'll announce the winner in our June newsletter. All entries will be entered to win our Caledon Country Club Outdoor Entertaining Package!

TIPS FROM THE PRO Improve your grip & improve your game!
Ultimately it's the fundamentals of the game of golf that are the difference between a good round and a bad round! While the fundamentals may seem less glamourous than the latest driver or putter on the market, the importance of grip, setup and posture should not be under-estimated. In fact, I would argue that most challenges to a golfer's game can be traced back to problems with their golf fundamentals.
Get a (good) grip! Your golf grip is your only physical point of contact with your golf club, and it clearly has a direct relationship on how your ball takes flight! The primary function of your golf grip is to help you correctly align the club face with the ball, so that you can hit the ball correctly.
Three basic golf grips While everyone has their own minor variations, there are really just three basic golf grips:
1. Overlapping Grip Often referred to as the Vardon grip, named after golf great Harry Vardon, this is probably the most widely used grip. Because it uses fewer fingers to control club movement, it tends to be more effective for use by those with stronger hands. 2.Interlocking Grip This grip keeps your hands connected during your swing, and tends to be favoured by golfers with small hands or relatively short fingers. 3.Baseball Grip Ideal for junior golfers and golfers whose hands aren't as strong, this grip gives you a firmer hold on your club since all 10 fingers are used for support. This grip allows you to more easily release your wrist during the swing, helping to provide a little more force when you hit the ball.
Avoid pressure! Once you decide on the type of grip that best suits your game, the other main factor that you need to consider is the strength/pressure of your grip on the club.
Your grip pressure influences the positioning of your hands on your club. Too much or too little pressure causes your hands to turn too far one way or the other on the club. Ultimately you want your grip pressure to be neutral -- not too strong or too weak. A weak grip means you are holding the club too loosely, and results in loss of club control during the swing. Gripping the club too tightly reduces the movement in your wrist, hand and forearm, and results in less distance in your drive.
Take some time to study and focus on your golf grip! We offer private, semi-private or group lessons -- a single or series of lessons can have a dramatic effect on your enjoyment of the game and your score! As legendary golfer Ben Hogan said so eloquently, "A player with a bad grip doesn't want a good swing!"
Yours in golf, Kevin Purcell CPGA Professional

GOLF ETIQUETTE: Honours
Honours refers to the order in which players tee off at any given hole. When a player earns "honours" they earn the right to play their ball before the rest of the players in the group. Generally speaking, the person with the lowest score on the previous hole is the first to tee off at the next hole, followed by the player with the second best score, and so on.
Etiquette dictates that no other golfer in the group should step up to the tee box before the person who holds the honours has shot (or has indicated that another golfer can go before them). In the event of a tie at any given hole, golfers maintain their place in the rotation until someone wins the next hole.
The only exception to the honours rule is when the group has agreed to play "ready golf", which means any player can "hit when ready". This style of play is often chosen to speed up the pace of the round, and in itself is considered good golf etiquette when conditions are slow. |
GOLF DICTIONARY: "Fat Shot"
A "fat shot" is considered one of the worst shots in golf! It refers to a shot where the golf club hits the ground before making contact with the ball, resulting in high or low shots and a considerable loss of distance. In fact, the ball often ends up just a few yards in front of you, with a lot of turf dug up in the process. Fat shots usually occur when a club swings down on too steep an angle. |
MORE OF OUR TEAM
Meet Sarah Robb Sous Chef Extraordinaire! Sarah Robb has worked at Caledon Country Club for the last four years in the capacity of Sous Chef extraordinaire! Sarah started cooking out of necessity (read...she needed a job when she was a student), but it soon became her passion!

She has incorporated all of her experience, knowledge and skill into her own unique and impressive style! Sarah has chosen to make cooking her career and this past winter took the next steps in her development by receiving her Red Seal accreditation. We are thrilled to have her as part of our team.
Sarah's favourite item on this year's restaurant menu is the Lemon Pepper Linguine. This entree includes a six-ounce char-broiled salmon fillet on top of a lemon pepper linguine in a cashew pesto cream sauce and garnished with a cherry tomato salsa. Try it yourself and let us know what you think!
