More Than Just Great Golf!
Spring, glorious spring! The season is off to a great start with all of this sunshine. The grass is growing and the trees are budding! With TaylorMade coming to the Club on May 23rd to demonstrate putters & wedges, we thought we'd focus this issue on the importance of the short game.
Harvey Pennick, in his "Little Red Book - Lessons & Teachings from a Lifetime in Golf" calls the short game the magic of the game. He suggests that over a two week period golfers devote 90% of their practice time to chipping and putting and only 10% to full swing practice. By doing this he guarantees an average score of 95 will turn into a 90. So we challenge you to work on your short game this month and see how you do.

TIPS FROM THE PRO The importance of the short game!
At the start of each new golf season all the buzz seems to be about the newest driver on the market that will allow you to hit farther and straighter. However, I would suggest that the best way to shave strokes off your score is to have a hard look at your short game! The old saying "drive for show, putt for dough" probably makes more sense than we realize. 60%-80% of the game is played from within 100 yards! Most golf professionals readily acknowledge that 60-80% of your game is shot from within 100 yards of the hole. This being the case, there is nothing that can help you improve your game more than saving some strokes on your short game.
When you are out on the course and your long game is not going the way you like, your short game can help save your round.
The essence of chipping! As you know, a chip is a low trajectory shot that actually rolls farther than it flies in the air. It is a relatively simple shot made with relatively simple swing. However, setup is everything - you want to achieve clean contact with the ball to create a downward blow.
Different clubs will provide different results when chipping. For instance a 60 foot chip with a 6-iron will send the ball approximately 10 feet in the air, with a roll of approximately 50 feet; a 60 foot chip with an 8-iron will send the ball approximately 18 feet in the air, with a roll of approximately 42 feet; and a pitching wedge will send the ball approximately 25 feet in the air with a roll of 35 feet.
Putting - a game within a game! The other element of your short game, putting, is often referred to as the game within the game. This is the part of the game that requires the most personal interpretation and where the decisions you make are often more important than the actual shot itself.
While the 4 to 6 foot putts are the ones we expect to make most of the time, these can often be the most unnerving shots in golf, especially when the pressure is on!
When putting take your time to read the contours of the green; review the distance of the putt; visualize your shot; align your body, the head of your putter and the label on your ball; and then slowly and thoughtfully take your putt!
Knowing that your short game can either make or break your round, consider a few rounds where your key focus will be the short game!
Putter & Wedge Day- May 23rd. 2 - 6pm If you want some personal advice on your short game, be sure to visit Caledon Country Club on Wednesday, May 23rd from 2-6 pm for our TaylorMade Putter & Wedge Day. Give your short game the attention it deserves this season and see what it does to your score. I think you will be pleased! See you on the greens! Kevin Purcell, CPGA Professional |
Putting - the game within the game
- The longest recorded putt was made by R.W. Bridges at the Woodlawn GC in Missouri in 1931. Astonishingly he used his putter for the 196 yard hole and scored an ace!
- "Putting is a little like religion-there are a multitude of beliefs but no general consensus as to which is the right one." Ben Crenshaw
- The pool cue was banned as a putter by the USGA in 1895!
- The two time-time Masters champ Bernard Langer used a putter with three plastic balls attached in line behind the head of the club.
- Average putting par for Caledon Country Club (and most 18- hole courses) is 2 shots per hole - so see if you can putt 36 on your next outing!

The Challenge of Fast Greens by Caledon Country Club Course Superintendent Leo Daigle
Watching this year's Masters tournament I couldn't help but notice how gingerly the pros were putting. Even the eventual winner, Zack Johnson, 3 putted from two and a half feet on the 16th hole in the 3rd round. Time and time again we witnessed seemingly simple two and three-foot putts break sharply and trickle on by the hole.
Super fast, undulating greens are meant to challenge the world's best! As a result, the players spent considerable time seriously studying and calculating the precise placement of every drive, approach shot and putt. Those magnificent greens presented an extreme challenge to the world's best and most skillful golfers - and that's what they were meant to do!
To the majority of people who play this wonderful sport however, golf is entertainment, and entertainment is meant to be a fun and enjoyable experience. Golf played on super fast greens may be entertaining to watch but not so entertaining to play.
Super Fast Greens Effect Every Aspect of Every Shot
From the drives to the approach shots, super fast greens effect every aspect of every shot in a round, not just the putting. It could be as subtle as simply landing the ball on the wrong side of the fairway or the pin thereby assuring extra strokes to the scorecard. That's not entertaining; it's exhausting, frustrating, draining and extremely time consuming.
How Green Speeds Effect Play
- Increased green speeds lead to reduced pin locations and increased scrutiny of the acceptability of the limited pin locations. Reduced pin locations lead to more concentrated traffic and extreme wear and thinning of the greens. Frustration increases as a result from slower play.
- Shorter greens mean increased maintenance. Shorter grass has less leaf surface for photosynthesis and the storage of carbohydrate reserves thereby stressing the plant and leaving it susceptible to diseases, heat stress, drought stress, insects, compaction and wear. All of these can be addressed with more aerification, more fungicides, more overseeding, more fertilizer, more verticutting, more topdressing and thus more labour - all of which cause more disruptions that cost more time and money.
At Caledon Country Club our goal is to have fast, smooth greens that everyone can enjoy and play at a reasonable pace. We want everyone to leave here saying, "That was challenging and fun!" and more importantly "Let's go back". While ultimately everyone wants to challenge their game and push themselves to do better, the bottom line is that golf is about fun and entertainment. Enjoy the 2007 season! Leo and Charlie
