Ya'll Set Down and Listen Up

October is National Substance Abuse Prevention & Medication Abuse Awareness Month, that's a mouthful and a half I know, but pay attention, this is important to the health of your community.

In Goodhue County, as in many other Minnesota counties, we are lucky to have an active and supported Chemical Health Initiative. The two staff members, Stacy Larson and Julie Hatch have the difficult job to educate us all and save us from ourselves. But, as I remember Mrs Noble say every day in my Mississippi  high school study hall  " Ya'll set down and LISTEN UP!"

The chemical health of our community and our children is the responsibility of every adult who lives and works in a community. It doesn't matter if you have teenagers, if you don't use alcohol or drugs, or if you ALWAYS have a designated driver.

Did you know?

  • 1 in 6 children have abused prescription medicines.
  • Every day, 2,000 teenagers use a prescription drug to get high for the first time. They're accessing these drugs in the comfort of home; it can be as easy as open-ing a cupboard, drawer, or medicine cabinet.
  • Every day, approximately 4,700 American youth under age 18 try marijuana for the first time. That is about equal to the enrollment of six average-sized U.S. high schools.
  •  In 2003, nearly nine out of 10 twelfth graders reported marijuana as being accessible.
  •  By the time they finish the eighth grade, approximately 50 percent of adolescents have had at least one drink, and more than 20 percent report having been "drunk."
  •  Drug and alcohol use by teens increases the risk of addiction and can change the developing brain for life.
Scary right?

How can you help?

Volunteer to serve on a CHI Community Health Council. (Check out our side bar for dates and times.) Chemical Health Councils work to identify local needs and resources to promote chemical health for the children living in their communities.

Get educated.

Don't turn your head in denial.

It's never to early to talk to your kids about drug and alcohol use.

The future of all of our communities depend on a healthy citizenry. Do what you can today, to ensure a better tomorrow for everyone.

 Thanks for "listenin' Up

A Response To Last Week's Newsletter

Thank you United Way for your share about SARA (Sexual Assault Resource Agency) here in Red Wing. Both Emily Baldwin and Katherine Cross are exceptional people who are dedicated to helping survivors of sexual violence. The United Way has shared its work with SARA way back in 2007.

I want share that SARA is the fiscal agent for and member of the Goodhue County SMART (Sexual Assault Multidisciplinary Response Action Team) which was formed in 2007. This is a team of professionals in our community (it is one of twelve teams in Minnesota) designed to include advocacy, corrections, medical, law enforcement, and prosecution agencies. The team has issued a Community Needs Assessment which the United Way of Goodhue, Wabasha and Pierce Counties helped write by sharing its local listing of community resource agencies. The team expanded the distribution of this "People's Pamphlet" to greater Goodhue County. More recently, the team has used the Needs Assessment to develop a booklet of recommended best practices for consistent support of survivors of sexual violence.

The Goodhue SMART thanks both SARA and the United Way for their support.
