It's Been Said Before...

It is Worth Repeating!

school supplies

Thank you! You guys are the greatest!  Anyone who has walked through our front door this past week has been as overwhelmed as we are at the amount of school supplies that have been donated. We are buried in primary colored merchandise!

Our goal initial goal was 500 items. When we passed 700 items with one donation we new that we had waaaaaayyyyyy under estimated the generosity of our supporters. We raised our goal to 2500 items and even that was too easily attained.  As of today, we stopped counting at 3000! Can you believe it? And that does not include donations from Red Wing Shoe who brought their items directly to Prairieview Elementary, or Bic/Norwood who are directly supporting Burnside School or Xcel Energy who just finished collecting and are bringing in their supplies later today.

You gave over:

  • 140 pencil packs
  • 102 pen packs
  • 82 calculators
  • 90 packs of loose leaf paper
  • 797 eraser packs
  • 100 + spiral notebooks
I have said it before but can never say it loud enough, often enough or clear enough. This is the best job ever, because every single day I am have the opportunity to see the best in people.  Every time United Way asks, you come through to help. What better reward for our efforts could we ask for than to have proof, every single day, that people care about those around them.

Thank You! Thank You! Thank You!
Maureen Nelson

Minnesota Nice - Your Response
1. Last week my daughter saw a woman crying on the side of the road.  She pulled over and asked if the woman was okay.  The woman told her she was homeless and had been since she was 15.  She recently left an abusive relationship.  My daughter took her to our house so she could shower, fed her and gave her a few changes of clothes.  Then, my daughter took her to the Hope Coalition and sat with the woman while they did her intake.  This is definitely an example of MN nice.  I did, though, have a long talk with her about safety and boundaries and ask that she call me or her dad next time for safety reasons.

2. Last week I was at the grocery store after a long and stressful 11 hour day at work. It was 6:00 PM, I was tired and hungry and eager to get home to my family. The store was busy with only 2 lanes open. I waited in a line behind 2 others. A heaping grocery cart was parked in the middle of the 2 open checkout lines, apparently abandoned by a shopper. As the clerk greeted me, a very young boy shouted "Excuse me! Excuse me!" Thinking that he wanted to scoot behind me to the exit, I moved forward. "You!" he said, glaring at me, "You BUDGED!" I looked at the checkout clerk who shook her head. "Did I budge? Were they in line?" She shook her head again. "I'm sorry" I said "Where were you in line?" He stomped away. I was so taken aback I really didn't know how to respond to the situation. I would never intentionally cut in line and was horrified at the accusation.

I glanced over my shoulder into the next checkout to see who this child belonged to. It was the heaping grocery cart woman. Now I really don't believe this child would have confronted a total stranger without the encouragement of the adult he was with and this bothered me a great deal. What if I had been equally confrontational? What if I had started yelling at him? Why would anyone take the chance? And what message is this sending to the child? I thought about when my own boys were that young and as a mother would never have put them in such a volatile situation.

How many people expect a checkout line to wait for them to run around the store to could pick up forgotten items? Minnesota nice is staying away from the checkout until you are really ready to check out. It's expecting that when you leave your cart, you also leave your place in line. And finally, it is realizing that you never know what burdens another person may be facing, so just be nice and always remember the golden rule.

Thanks for sharing your experiences.
Reuse Your Old Computers

Your old computers don't belong in a storage closet, landfill or recycling center.  They belong in the community, creating new opportunities to local low-income families and senior citizens.

PCs for People has refurbished over 14,000 computers since 1998.  They refurbish computers for eleigible low income recipients so they can enjoy the personal, economic and educational benefits of personal computer ownership.

PC's for People will be coming to Red Wing . Working with United Way, sponsored by a grant from HBCI , they will be at United Lutheran Church September 5th, 6th and 7th.   The staff at Hope Coalition is busy identifying families who will receive computers but we need your help as well.

We are currently looking for computers in working condition, (drives will be wiped clean and a new version of Windows installed) with a
Pentium 4 or newer processor, - generally this means less than eight years old.
Accessories needed include keyboards, mice, power cords and monitors.  Older CRT screens are accepted but must be in working condition
.
