One Thing You Cannot Do in the Fight Against Hunger In the last newsletter I wrote briefly about hunger and the National Association of Letter Carriers annual " Stamp Out Hunger Campaign. Well the results are in and to people in our service area we say Thank You! Lake City collected 800 lbs. of food Cannon Falls collected 1380 of food Zumbrota collected 2250 lbs. of food Wabasha collected 2400 lbs. of food Red Wing collected 8558 lbs. of food All together that is 15, 388 lbs. of food The generosity shown is worth celebrating and the Letter Carriers and food shelf volunteers who gave up a Saturday to weigh, sort, shelf and find space for all that food all need to be recognized. Monetary donations were also generous and today in Zumbrota they are still receiving food. Thank You to everyone who was a part of this fantastic effort. In Red Wing we heard stories of student housing having bags piled high next to the mailboxes and volunteers unloading and sorting from 8 am until PM. Here at the United Way we were so happy to hear from our local food shelf about the fabulous results, celebrating the very small role we played in the success. Then I asked the wrong/right question, "How long will that much food last ?" Reality crushed our celebration. The answer " about 3 weeks." With the Red Wing food shelf serving over 100 families 8558 lbs. of food doesn't last as long as we might hope. Again, thank you for your generosity, for responding to the call to action, but the truth is hunger does not take a holiday. In fact summer brings additional hunger concerns. When the up to 10 meals a week provided by the schools are no longer available, families have to make their food dollars stretch even further. Hunger has not ended and going forward the only thing we can't do to alleviate hunger is to do nothing. Maureen Nelson |
