RUN LIKE A GIRL

Red Wing Track Coach Jesse Nelson runs the Girls on the Run 5k with daughter Tenley

Proud to Run Like a Girl

Long ago and not so very far away,(suburban Twin Cities) I remember the insult of boys telling other boys "you run like a girl". At that time it meant, slow, dainty and prissy. Girls ran that way because we wore dresses and we didn't want to be labeled.. ugh...the nastiness of it all...a tomboy!!!!!

That didn't last long because softball summers began and with junior high we girls had so many athletic opportunities. Let's see... there was gymnastics, synchronized swimming, track and field and who can forget ...G.A.A. The Girls Athletic Association!!!  Ahh yes, those wonderful afternoons in our baby-blue, baggy butt gym suits when we were allowed to play basketball and field hockey and actually be aggressive.  The saddest part of this is I am not  90 years old! This was in our not too distant past.  Thankfully, things have gotten better for girls.

When my middle child was ten years old,  a wonderful neighbor woman approached her about joining a new group she was bringing to town called Girls on the RunŽ  (GOTR).  Cammy, my daughter, liked Deb, the neighbor, and decided to try it . That was over ten years ago and I can honestly tell you, that program has touched every day of her life. Now a self assured young woman and still a runner, Cammy says, " Participating in GOTR gave me the foundation off of which I was able to build a strong sense of self-esteem and the determination to chase my dreams. GOTR and the follow up programs, Girls on Track and Go Girls helped me to form an understanding of what real beauty and strength are at a young enough age that I was able to carry it throughout my formative years."

Girls on the Run is a positive youth development program which combines an interactive curriculum and running to inspire self-respect and healthy lifestyles in pre-teen girls. Their core curriculum addresses many aspects of girls' development - their physical, emotional, mental and social well-being. Lessons provide girls with the tools to make positive decisions and to avoid risky adolescent behaviors.

Over 196 girls currently  participate in the Girls on the Run Bluff Country groups. Over 50 women and high school young women participate as volunteer coaches assistant coaches and junior coaches. Leader, Martha Harris is very proud of the high school women who volunteer as Junior Coaches.  "The younger girls just love them and really listen to what they have to teach!", but adds, " More coaches are needed!"

Each GOTR season culminates in a 5k Run. When Cammy ran her first 5k it was a cold day and about 30 girls and adult running  partners ran the race to the cheers of their families. Boy, or should I say GIRL, things have changed.  Last years' race had over 400 participants. Entire families ran, girls, boys, moms and dads, mentors and coaches and friends ran. It is a wonderful, energizing event supported by many.

This years' race is Saturday May 19th at Red Wing High School. Martha tells me they are in need of volunteers for face - painting, set up and clean up. So if you are in the area - get out there and proudly RUN LIKE A GIRL, or volunteer to help somehow, just leave the baby-blue, baggy butt gym suits at home

Financial Records - What to Keep and When to Toss

Shredding important documents is one of the most effective ways of insuring that financial information doesn't end up in the wrong hands. The following is a simple record retention guide that may help to eliminate some of the confusion over how long financial information should be retained (Source: www.bankrate.com):

45 Days

Credit card receipts: Receipts that match up with monthly statements can be shredded, but statements should be kept for seven years if used as documentation on tax returns (see Tax Returns, below):

One Year - Permanently

* Paycheck Stubs: Reconcile paycheck stubs with the W2 form. If there are no errors, pay stubs can be destroyed.
* Bills: Bills can be shredded once canceled checks are returned. For large purchases, bills should be retained indefinitely for replacement value in the event of loss or damage.
* Bank Records: Minor bank records can be shredded after a year, unless used to document deductible tax expenses, such as mortgage payments, or business expenses.
* Retirement and Savings Plan Statements: Quarterly statements from retirement or savings plans should be reconciled with the annual statements, and then can be shredded if there are no discrepancies. Annual statements should be retained permanently

Seven Years

Tax Returns: Tax returns should be kept for seven years. If the IRS suspects gross under-reporting on a return, they have six years from the time a return has been filed to conduct an audit. If you suspect you have reported in error and wish to amend a report, or if the IRS detects a mistake, they have three years to audit your return. Receipts that accompany a return must also be kept, such as canceled checks and receipts for alimony payments, charitable contributions, retirement plan contributions/statements.
