Does Winning the BIG Money Change You? Okay. I know that I am not the only one who bought a Powerball ticket and spent part of last week daydreaming, thinking and talking about what I would do if I were the big money winner. We all do it, it's fun, to imagine our lives with no financial worries and plenty of money to share. What would you do? Would you share? In October 2005 Steve and Carolyn West along with Carolyn's parents, Bob and Frances Chaney, won what was then the largest single-ticket Powerball jackpot in history: $340 million. "We found out when we didn't have the money, we dreamed about all these fantastic things you think you need," says Steve. "Then, when you have the money to buy whatever you want, you realize it's not the stuff you can buy that's really important; it's still being around family." A study by University of California researchers found that the overall happiness levels of lottery winners spiked up when they won, but settled back down to pre-winning levels after a few months. So if people were generally happy before they won, they would return to their natural level of happiness. I always think it would be so fun to be able to generously support causes for which I care deeply. This would bring me joy, like giving a gift that I have carefully chosen and am eager share with the receiver of the gift. It makes me happy. The best part of giving is the amount given doesn't really matter. The joy is in the giving. Period. I love giving gifts I've made. Almost everyone I know has a Christmas tree decoration (or twenty, depending on how long we have been friends) that was made for them. These usually only cost time, but time is a valuable resource for many. So while dreaming about winning the lottery, buying a home in Hawaii and supporting our United Way for life is nice, the reality is that sudden wealth only exaggerates a current situation. If you are unhappy, bad with money and surrounded by people you don't trust, money will make those problems worse. If you are fulfilled, careful with money and enjoy a life of strong relationships, winning the lottery could make those strengths better. For now, I am going to remain happy giving what I can, when I can. Hopefully it will be enough to leave a legacy of caring and generosity for my children to remember and be proud of. Maureen Nelson |

GRANT OPPORTUNITY FROM ITECHRA Itechra has received a significant response to the Partnering Agency Technology Grant. Thanks for sharing this opportunity with your partnering agencies! Because of the amount of continued interest, Itechra would like to extend the deadline from March 31st to April 30th, and increase the total grant amount to $25,000, to allow additional nonprofit organizations to take advantage of the grant offer. Itechra helps local United Way and other nonprofit organizations throughout the country engage and communicate more effectively with their public by providing them with website technology tools that heighten organization awareness, increase online donations, integrate with social media sites such as Facebook & Twitter and much more. The grant is intended to assist with the design and setup of a new website using the Itechra CMS. The grant amounts are determined on a case-by-case basis, depending on a nonprofit's specific web needs. The Itechra Nonprofit CMS has the same great features and benefits as the Itechra CMS for United Ways, but would be branded for their organization. For more information about the Itechra Nonprofit CMS and/or the Partnering Agency Technology Grant, please call Christy Aitken, Marketing Assistant at 507-454-2475 ex. 128 or via email at christy.aitken@itechra.com. |
