To my friends
Today I am challenging you to Follow My Lead. Sounds like a game right? Well it is much more serious than the game we all played as children, but it can still be fun. If you meet my challenge, please take the time to challenge those people on your email list. This is definitely a "more the merrier" challenge. More people joining in means we all benefit in strong, healthy communities.
You all know that I care about people who are struggling. I have been fortunate to not have had to face many struggles in my life and when I have, there has always been somebody there to help me. United Way of Goodhue, Wabasha & Pierce Counties exists to help people who are struggling and to work toward finding solutions to the root causes of many of the problems in our communities
I GIVE to United Way because:
- My donation is used to help people who live and work in my community.
- 100% of my donation goes directly to program costs.
- Volunteers who are my neighbors and friends make the tough decisions on how my donation is spent.
I GAVE to United Way this year because:
- 139 children in Red Wing and 75 children in Cannon Falls are receiving weekly food weekly with the Packing for the Weekend Project
- 1900 children under the age of five, are receiving books monthly to expose them to the joy of reading through Imagination Library
- Goodhue county residents with little or no health insurance can receive physical, mental and dental health care at the CARE Clinic
- Middle school students have the programs of The Remedy to keep them safe and occupied during crucial after school hours. High school students have the staff of Youth Outreach and TLC to guide them when they feel they have no one else to turn to and Kids Count feeds and nurtures children of all ages who have suffered abuse
- Senior citizens are remaining in their homes longer due to the many programs such as peer helpers, ride availability, home delivered meals and many more that support their independence
United Way set a very aggressive goal for the campaign this year because the needs in the communities served are so much greater.
Our goal is $575,000.
That is high, but with the donations already pledged we have reached just over 70% of our goal.
If you have already given to United Way of Goodhue, Wabash & Pierce Counties this year, thank you for caring. If you have not yet given, please - follow my lead and Give today.
Visit our website at www.uw-gwp.org and click on the orange GIVE button.
Or send a check to:
United Way - GWP
413 W. 3rd Street
Red Wing, MN 55066
How you give, and how much you give isn't as important as the fact that you have given. Once you have made your donation, send this email to your friends who care and ask them to Follow Your Lead!
Thank you
Maureen Nelson

Valspar Corporation and SMIF Offer Free Paint for Community Projects (OWAOTNNA) Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation (SMIF), in partnership with Valspar Corporation, will be accepting applications for free paint and coating products for community restoration or beautification projects through the Picture-It-Painted grant program. This grant opportunity is available to 501(c) nonprofit organizations and communities throughout SMIF's 20-county area. A goal of this program is to encourage local volunteer involvement in the painting process. Applications are due to SMIF by March 5, 2012. Awardees will be notified March 26, 2012. A total of approximately 8-10 projects will be awarded paint products based on visual impact, public benefit, volunteer participation and support, intended use, and benefit to those in need. Projects that may qualify for a grant include historic buildings or structures, senior citizen centers, community centers, libraries, other public buildings, murals, or other visual impact projects. Projects that do not qualify include churches, routine city maintenance, privately owned facilities, non-permanent structures, or schools (with the exception of mural projects). Since 1998, SMIF and Valspar Corporation have awarded over 6,000 gallons of paint to more than 200 projects in southern Minnesota. Last year's recipients in the region included projects in Albert Lea, Blue Earth, Caledonia, Chatfield, Gaylord, Mankato, Minneiska, Utica, Waseca, and Zumbrota. "The Picture-it-Painted program reminds us that collaboration shapes and improves our communities. Funded projects involve a number of volunteers and will provide their communities with an asset they can enjoy for years to come," said Tim Penny, SMIF President & CEO. "We are pleased to support these projects that will improve the look of our region."
