Thanksgiving Thoughts
Last week you all read about what I am thankful for at United Way. But United Way is so much more than this office, this staff and this board of directors. United Way is the neighborhoods we live in, the people we know and the people we don't know yet. United Way is the volunteers who give unselfishly of their time, all of you donors who give generously to support our work and especially the agencies we partner with who help people in need. This week I asked those agencies to share with you what they are thankful for, and they didn't let me down.
From Colleen Hansen, Family Development Director
Three Rivers Community Action, Inc.
I am thankful to be employed and to be able to work with people and families who are resilient and determined and strong even in the face of challenges. We are thankful to be able to have an Americorps Volunteer, which allows us to expand our services to include Financial Stability classes again. We are thankful to be able to expand our transit operations to include services in Faribault starting in January. We are thankful to have quality staff working together to continue to provide quality services throughout our service area and beyond. Wishing everyone a Great Thanksgiving.
From Kristine Kvols, President, HOPE Coalition
HOPE Coalition is continually thankful for the opportunity to bear witness to the strength, resiliency, determination, and grace of the people we serve. It is an amazing honor to walk beside our clients for a short time in their journey.
HOPE Coalition is grateful for the generous outpouring of community support shown though out the year and again just last week during Give to the Max Day.
HOPE Coalition is grateful to be celebrating 21 years of service. We are grateful for our talented staff and volunteers (including our Board of Directors) for their commitment to our clients and our agency.
From Parker Quammen, Executive Director Goodhue County Habitat for Humanity
We are thankful to have successfully completed another Habitat home, our 28th. We are thankful that the family will be in the house before the end of November.
From Jeanne Follstad, Catholic Charities Rural Counceling
I'm thankful for all of the caring providers working together to meet the ever growing needs of our community.
From Debbie Betthauser, RD., LD.
Semcac Senior Services Director
Semcac Sr. Nutrition is "thankful" for the tremendous community/local support for our services....in the way of local United Way support, and local contributions of space from the Red Wing HRA , Southeastern MN MCHRA, Cities and local supporters in Cannon Falls, Kellogg, Kenyon, Plainview, Pine Island, Wabasha, Wanamingo, and Zumbrota, as well as the more than 1,400 seniors who attend and volunteer at the 10 dining sites in Goodhue and Wabasha County.
From all of us at United Way of Goodhue, Wabasha & Pierce Counties, wishing you grace this Thanksgiving.

 | | Evie Dahling Leads Lake City Food Shelf |
Evelyn Dahling Lives United
What does it mean to LIVE UNITED? For Evie ,the director of the Lake City Food Shelf since 1997, it means with the help and support of her husband, Don, she has taken this organization from a little jail cell in City Hall with insufficient funds to the Blue Ribbon Food Shelf it is today. The Lake city Food Shelf currently occupies a free-standing building maintained by the City and they are able to offer many items that other food shelves do not have the resources to do such as frozen and refrigerated products, personal hygiene items, diapers, etc. With a staff of 25 dedicated volunteers plus the support of all the community churches, the Lions Club, the Rotary, the Kiwanis , and others, under Evie's leadership, they also coordinate the Adopt-a-Family program in conjunction with a couple of churches at Christmas; provide school supplies for grades K-6; distribute turkeys at Thanksgiving; and participate with the Canadian Pacific Holiday Train event. Evie is well-known throughout the community as evidenced by the frequency of her appearance in the local paper as she is out promoting the program and receiving donations from groups. This unpaid volunteer position has occupied most of Evie and Don's retirement years as it is a never-ending job keeping up with the fund-raising and reports and applications required in today's computer-oriented environment. Her ability to adapt to the technology advances is amazing and an incentive for us all to keep learning new things. Evie is my hometown hero.... my friend, and a friend.
Hats off to Evie Dahling for Living United!

Don't Let the Grinch Steal Your Christmas!
Beware of these 5 Holiday Scams
Con artists are "working hard" to get their hands on your money this holiday season. Do not let all the holiday festivities blind you to scams and rip-offs.
Naming a Star- What gift could you give someone that symbolizes the first Christmas?...A Star! Various companies claim you can name a star and costs $20-$150. These companies will send you a certificate with the name and location of "your star" and promise that your star's name will be in a star registry. Stars are named by the International Astronomical Union-and they aren't selling. Stars are traditionally assigned numbers and are assigned according to the internationally accepted rules of the IAU. When the companies say your star is going into a "registry," they mean whatever registry they made up.
Fake Charities- Many charities will come knocking, calling or mailing you for donations because people are more generous during the holidays. According to the Federal Trade Commission, many of the calls you get his year will be from scam artists. The FTC has a checklist of warning signs to help you steer clear of charity scams. Make an annual charity giving plan and stick to it.
Spam Solicitations- Never buy anything from an unsolicited e-mail. No matter how "good" the deal is, it is not worth the risk of losing your money or giving any of your personal information to a possible scam artist. Delete these e-mails and do not respond to them because it lets the spammers know that you have a working e-mail address and sets you up to become a victim of identity theft.
Online Auction Scams- Bid wisely and pay for items using your credit card, if not PayPal, so you can cancel or dispute the payment if you do not receive your merchandise or is not what the person made it out be.
The High-Pressure Sale- The most annoying scam may just be the legal one: the high-pressure sale. It can happen anywhere, the car lot, over the phone. Rest assured, there are lots of products in the world, and if one person is willing to give you a "good deal" on it, someone else will too. Go home, research the product and prices online, and save yourself from paying too much.
