logoViolence against women: old dilemmas and new challenges
Violence against women is a pervasive problem in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). The prevalence of intimate partner violence is estimated at between 25-69% and the proportion of girls reporting sexual abuse is between 5-46%. Challenges regarding the dynamics of domestic violence, work and sexual violence, and the specific needs of migrants, must be addressed by policies and programs emcompassing eradication of violence against women.

Liliana Gastrón
According to estimates from ECLAC (2006), by 2050 between 5-30% of the population will be over 60 years old in Latin America and the Caribbean. The current public policies in the region do not address the multiple dimensions of the home care needs of the elderly, since this task is still assumed as a natural component of unpaid domestic work. It is necessary to strengthen the social protection mechanisms toward this population group, increasing the social responsibility regarding their needs. More information... (Spanish)
