| PENNIE FOR YOUR THOUGHTS... |
|
|
Our monthly column from author Pennie Murray with motivational tidbits we can use!
11/2007 -From time-to-time there's a poem by Jessie Rittenhouse that comes to mind and reminds me to challenge the level of what I "ask" and more importantly "expect" out of life;
I bargained with Life for a penny and Life would pay no more. However I begged at evening when I counted my scanty store.
For Life is a just employer, she gives you what you ask.
But once you have set the wages, why, you must bear the task.
I worked for a menial's hire, only to learn, dismayed,
that any wage I had asked of Life, Life would have willingly paid.
A lot of things happen to us that can convince us to bargain or compromise our way through life-and we dare not ask for or expect more. After a few false starts and a few more crash and burns, we just begin to expect a scantier share of life's treasure.
I bring this up in response to a recent conference I attended where the topic of job satisfaction was discussed. One issue that resonated (sometimes passionately) in the room was the fact that many felt they were not being paid what they were worth. As I listened, this poem came to mind and I thought, it's easy to point a finger to a perceived external power and become angry or depressed about what we think we have been denied.
But the truth of the matter is; we're setting the wage that life pays us by what we ask for; and more importantly what we expect to receive. To truly own up to the fact that "we have not because we ask not" is difficult for many to accept. So here's a question for you; when are you going to live in your power and start asking for more, and expecting greater?

Black Men and Our Health
By Kevin Powell
I received a very distressing email a few days back, from someone who informed me that a long-time friend and colleague of mine had had a mini-stroke. I was stunned because this friend, a Black man just barely 40 like myself, holds a black belt in the martial arts, works out religiously, and dating back twenty years, when we both were then members of the Nation of Islam, he has always been very conscience of the food he puts into his body.
