Pennie for your thoughts...
|
| A monthly column with our 2 cents on a matter! Featuring author and inspirational speaker Pennie Murray.
====================
Watching TV the other day I saw a news report talking about Elizabeth Taylor. I wasn't really paying attention and have no clue what it was about. But my consciousness woke up-and all things seemed to stand completely still-when I heard her say, "Silence breeds shame." We don't have to go back too far in time to find evidence that our history in America has been one of imposed silence. But the breeding of our shame comes in our willingness to remain silent in a time when we have greater self-autonomy. Don't get me wrong, the silence is not in the fact that few are talking-we have more than enough of that. The silence is in our social idleness, our lack of self-exertion. No one can convince me that we don't have the ability to create our own way to resolution-we've just resigned, as individuals, to live in silence.
There is a social change taking place that we must take part in. Therefore, we have to come out of silence and live our lives on blast! We have a golden opportunity, right now, to live in our "inventive inheritance." And this starts with identifying and being loyal to our passions.

QUESTION:
A group of girl friends and I went out to see Tyler Perry's new movie "Why Did I Get Married" I admit I didn't know what to expect, although I hoped that it would be a good movie and positive reflection of black relationships. Imagine the sigh of relief when I realized that by the end we had laughed, cried, cursed and at moments, gasped, through the entire movie.
Of course the movie got us all talking, and we would have talked more if it hadn't been so late, but one question remained - for the single "Why do you want to get married?" and for the already married "Why did you get married?"
In a time where divorce is prevalent and folks are prolonging the decision, or choosing instead to partner without a ring or opting out all together...I'm curious to see what we all have to say...

Artist, Educator, Entrepenuer and....
Public Speaker
Most people know RhapsodE primarily as a performance artist. But Erica "RhapsodE" Hawthorne has taken her various professional, educational and creative experiences to pursue one of her other great passions: Speaking to others to help them reach their fullest potential.
==================================
Erica (aka RhapsodE) began public speaking while attending college as an undergraduate, traveling to local conferences and colleges to speak to student organizations and their leaders on topics ranging from mainting sisterhood in sororities to student leadership.
After graduation, she began a career in higher education working in residential life. It was here that she developed a special interest in the unique challenges of first-year college students.
"I watched bright, young, capable students arrive at the college ready for the world. By December I watched some of those same young people leave college all together. That saddened me. I realized I needed to reach students before it came to that."
Erica moved to Philly and completed her graduate work in African American studies while working with a women's abuse shelter where she worked in development and created a poetry program and fundraising event for the shelter.
"Speaking with the women was a life-changing experience. I have a sincere passion for seeing to it that women are encouraged to be their fullest and brightest selves."
After graduation she took a job with Swarthmore College helping high school students in the Upward Bound program prepare for college. She developed a series of workshops specifically designed to prepare students for success in their first year of college and beyond.
In 2005, Erica founded Spoke Inward Creative Consulting, LLC, a company that focuses on creating initiatives, products, workshops and creative performances that encourage others to reach their fullest potential.
"I love speaking on women issues, succeeding in college, time management, poetry workshops, entrepenuership, etc... I feel blessed to have the experiences that I have in these areas, so I feel I'm responsible for sharing as much of what I've learned with others so that they are encouraged to do much more."

BOOK: HOLLA BACK...But Listen First |
I love books that encourage young people to read. And after I read Holla Back...But Listen First...
I knew I had to tell other folks about this book.
Author, Mister Mann Frisby (and yes that's his real name) offers a book that is a great tool for parents and mentors to utilize.
"This unique motivational book features the candid reflections of 30 African American men from all walks of life. The topics that they discuss include sex, sports, religion, drugs, surviving failure, violence and poverty to name a few."
There are interviews with Kirk Franklin, Common, Fatin Dantzler (from Kindred), John Legend, Boris Kodjoe and many many others. If you are looking for a book to give a young man to read, this would be one to add to their collection. The mens' responses are candid, sincere and straightforward. [Click on the image to go to Mister's myspace page or check out www.amazon.com to order a copy of the book].
Mister is author of two other fiction books "Blinking Red Lights" and "Wifebeater" and is founder/mentor for Phatback Mentoring program based in Philadelphia. |
| BOOK: Slanted Subjects |
With a title like Slanted Subjects an educated guess may be that the subjects you're about to read may be, let's say...a little slanted. Maybe it's the way the author interviews himself at the start of the book with a bit a creative sarcasm, or could be the slant of opinion on matters of love, God and politics that have been wrapped in colorful characters and dipped in poetry.
Whatever slant author Andre Byers chooses only makes it easy for creative ideas to flow. Founder of InGenius Press, Byers uses his literary debut to mix prose, poetry and essay in a literary gumbo of work. Reoccurring characters like Furious and B. Easy have been purposely named and selected for the stories in which they appear. And you can't help but wonder if Mr. Byers isn't telling a little of himself and his own views through some of the characters and stories.
His debut published work reminds me of the literary flavorings of Toure, Langston Hughes, Walter Mosley and even a little DuBois if you don't mind. I think we call them Rennaisance men...So take a read for yourself (available on www.amazon.com).
Catch Byers in the D.C. area promoting his book, attending open readings or taking pics a la Gordon Parks in-state and abroad. [click on image to go to his myspace page]. |
