Pennie for your thoughts...

A monthly column with our 2 cents on a matter! Featuring author and inspirational speaker Pennie Murray.

The chorus of a song caught my attention the other day, "I'm a movement by myself; but I'm a force when we're together." (Fabolous - You Make Me Better). I begin to think about the man who shares my life. He supports, encourages, challenges my thought process, loves and yes, even criticizes me-he makes me better. But by the end of the song I found myself thinking about my black people and how far we've drifted apart.

Individualism is good. It's about self-reliance and liberty; it exercises individual goals and desires. And yet, we could be so much better if we recognize, as our ancestors did, the greater value is found in interdependence. Yes, we can, and do make progress by ourselves, but together we create an energy that cannot be vanquished. In Fabolous' words, "though I'm hot-together we burn it up!"

RHAPS TESTED - RHAPS APPROVED

I tried it, I liked it...and now I'm telling you about it! ENJOY!

Alice Smith's album

alice smith's albumA few months s ago, myself and half of the east coast crammed into the World Cafe Live main room for the Black Lily Film and Music Fest. When a very unassuming artist stepped to the mic and held us hostage for a straight 20-minutes with no complaints...no one breathed or moved! All for the 4-octave-though-not-formally-trained-no-less-dynamic voice belonging to Ms. Alice Smith. Just last month we rushed to Philly's Tin Angel to experience it all over again! This is definitely an album to have if you like your music fresh, sexy and addictive...but I assure you, hearing it live is an experience all it's own...ask anyone who saw her in Philly!

heidiroland earrings

heidiroland earringsAnyone who knows me knows that I loooove creative jewelry! A couple of weeks ago I ran into Heidi Roland at a Women Who Rock event here in Philly and she gave away a few free sets of her signature earrings that she cleverly designs from catchy photographic shots. Great idea! I love photography, I love jewelry...now I just have to stop taking my earrings off to show everyone the neat pic they make when you put them together!

Desdamona's new album

des' albumShe did it again! Desdamona's sophomore project mixes a little hip hop with a little beatmakin', mcin' beatboxin' singin' flavorful wordsmithing once again blessed by duo Sly & Robbie to follow up her debut album "The Ledge" with "The Source". Well we all know the source is love so why not go on and show her some by downloading it to your ipod or putting the CD in the player?! Check her myspace page for tour dates! She may be headed to a city near you!

YOU SAID IT!

(and I thank you...)
"I purchased the CD and am extremely pleased. I've only had it about a week but I have listened to the entire CD several times. RhapsodE, keep up the good work."
