VOLUNTEERS!

We still need volunteers to help in a few areas such as COLLECTIBLES (set up displays, work shifts selling clothing and other goods) and BUS GUIDES (ride the buses which transport our visitors and answer questions as well as pointing out things of interest). If you like people, then both of these jobs would suit you perfectly! Give us a call today, 410-822-4567 or email [email protected]
if you'd like to help us out!
We're Sprucing Up the Goose!

With the Waterfowl Festival just around the corner, Festival volunteer Bill Reybold was found busily scrubbing and waxing the goose sculpture found in front of the Armory, the Festival's headquarters and home of the Chesapeake Carving Gallery. The sculpture, entitled "Family Affair" was commissioned by Bart Walter to mark the Festival's 25th anniversary in 1995. Reybold spruces up the goose each year in preparation for the Festival, now in its 38th year. (Photo by Cyndy Carrington Miller)

New Gallery Features Rarely Seen Artists
By Cyndy Carrington Miller

Aldrich
Each year, the Waterfowl Festival presents the work of some of the world's most renowned wildlife artists. Even more of these nationally recognized artists will be featured with the new Guest Artist Gallery. This gallery, along with the Masters Gallery, will be found at the Academy Art Museum.

The Guest Artist Gallery will feature work with a wide range of subject matter from artists including Edward Aldrich (his Mid Morning Stretch is seen above), Peter Corbin, Rod Crossman, Phillip Crowe, Terry Isaac, Jim Killen, Bruce Miller, Jerry Raedeke, John Ruthven, and Lindsay Scott.

The Masters Gallery will continue to offer visitors an opportunity to view and purchase sculptures and paintings from the best of the best. These are artists, living or deceased, who are acclaimed in the art world as masters in their medium. Work will be presented from Robert Abbett, Robert Bateman, advantage cardRichard Bishop, Raymond Harris-Ching, Lanford Monroe, Manfred Schatz, Brett Smith and more.

In addition, John Sharp has been chosen to be the 2008 Featured Artist at the Masters Gallery (pictured at right). Robert J. Koenke, co-chairman of the Masters Gallery, described Sharp as being in a class by himself. Sharp is not simply a carver, but a wood sculptor, creating masterpieces of stylized realism primarily in black walnut and cherry. His work has won ten "Best in World" titles at the Ward World Championship Wildfowl Carving Competition and he will be on hand to meet visitors and answer questions.

Lots of Wet Dogs at the Festival
By Cyndy Carrington Miller

dock dogsThe Dock Dogs are returning to entertain visitors at this years Waterfowl Festival. The competition debuted at last year's Festival and was a hit with the crowds, joining the annual Retriever Demonstrations as must-see events for dog lovers.

This dog-jumping event is not just for professionally trained retrievers. Anyone may enter his/her own dog - house pet or hunting companion, pure bred or mixed breed - as long as the dog is 6 months of age or older. Pre-registrations can be made online at the Dock Dogs website, www.dockdogs.com. You may also enter on the day of the event at the Waterfowl Festival. However, last year the few available on-site registration slots filled up quickly, so pre-registration is advised. The local Dock Dogs chapter is hosting the competition. A $20 entry fee includes at least one practice jump and two competitive jumps. Handlers receive one free Festival ticket for each dog entered, allowing them to enjoy the rest of the Festival in addition to the competition. A Festival ticket or badge is required for spectators.

Competitions will take place at Easton Middle School all three days of the Festival. With almost continuous activity, Festival visitors will be able to stop by anytime for some wet dog action!
