Continuing its partnership with Ars Libri (500 Harrison Ave), the Robert Klein Gallery (38 Newbury St) will exhibit photography portfolios in the Ars Libri space July 6 through August 31. Themed series presented in book or portfolio form by four contemporary photographers and several twentieth century photographers will be on display, running the gamut from self-portraits to documentary landscape photographs. The exhibition, By the Book, will open with a reception on Friday, July 6, from 5:30 to 7:30 during the South End's First Friday.
By the Book will look at the obsessive and often narrative structure of photography portfolios. Individual portfolio prints by twentieth century photographers Aaron Siskind, Mario Giacomelli and Eliot Porter will be on view in addition to selections from The Hope Chest, Cig Harvey's 2010 collection of images and text, and the White Underpants Portfolio by Massachusetts-based photographer Arno Rafael Minkkinen. Images from photographer Jeff Brouws' Partially Painted Pick-ups Portfolio will also be exhibited alongside a group of Wendy Burton's prints of empty birds' nests.
