Twitter, Facebook, MySpace: The Issues and Benefits of Social Media |
With Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and many other social networking sites, a click of a mouse allows us to reconnect with friends, download pictures, instant message and comment on somebody's wall. By the same token, a person can victimize, traumatize, abuse and bully. Typically when we hear the term "bullying" we think of physical action, but in today's day and age "bullying" can be done through technology.
So what is Cyberbullying?
Cyberbullying is when a child, preteen, or teen is tormented, threatned, harassed, humiliated, embarassed or otherwise targeted by another child, preteen, or teen via Internet, interactive and digital technologies or mobile phones. Technology is a double-edged sword, which can be dangerous, especially for children. Although technology has been an advantage in today's society, it has also been a burden. More and more children are logging on whether it be via personal computers or cellphones, and face the threat of exposure to cyberbullying.

The Weakness of Social Media |
Megan Meier commits suicide after being told by her online MySpace friend, Josh Evans whom she befriended with the permission of her mother, that: "the world would be a better place without you, have a shitty rest of your life!"
She was hysterical after reading these words and getting harrassed by Josh's friends and ran to her room. Megan Meirer was only 13 years old and killed herself.
HERE'S THE CATCH:
Josh Evans never existed. He'd been fabricated by a neighbor, Lori Drew, the mother of one of Meier's former friends.
