ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRIES COUNCIL ANNOUNCES NOMINEES FOR 2009 PRISM AWARDS
 
Desperate Housewives, The Office, Grey's Anatomy, Law & Order: SVU, Boston Legal, The Cleaner, Mad Men, Rachel Getting Married, Among Nominees to be Honored for Accurate Portrayal of Substance Abuse and Mental Health Issues.

 
LOS ANGELES, CA, February 10, 2009 - Desperate Housewives, Grey's Anatomy, The Office, Mad Men, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, and the films Rachel Getting Married and Stop-Loss are among the productions receiving nods for the 2009 PRISM Awards. The PRISM Awards, which is produced by the Entertainment Industries Council, Inc. (EIC) in collaboration with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and FX, honor actors, movies, music, media and television's top shows that accurately depict and bring attention to substance abuse and mental health issues. This year's ceremony, which is set for April 23, 2009, will take place at the Beverly Hills Hotel.

"All one has to do is watch the evening news to see how tough times are affecting the American psyche," said EIC President and CEO, Brian Dyak.  "Increased risk of substance abuse and mental health concerns is a reality which dictates that we as an industry must rise to the call to be an industry of character and respect for our viewers. PRISM faces those realities and puts forth hope - the exact optimism we all need right now."
 

ABC earned 11 nominations - the most among the networks - followed by NBC, A&E, HBO, E!, CBS, CW, The N, Lifetime, FOX, AMC, WE TV, VH1, PBS, USA and Hallmark, with multiple nods. Among studios, CBS Paramount led with 9, then ABC Studios, Universal, 20th Century Fox Television/Fox Searchlight, Warner Bros., Sony Pictures Television/Sony Classics, Magnolia Pictures, Wolf Films, Paramount Pictures, and David E. Kelley Productions.

Among the top feature films nominated in various categories are Rachel Getting Married, Stop-Loss, The Wrestler, and Finding Amanda.   Matthew Broderick (Finding Amanda), Anne Hathaway (Rachel Getting Married), Ryan Phillippe (Stop-Loss), Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler) and Brittany Snow (Finding Amanda) are all competing for "Performance in a Feature Film."
 
Three-time PRISM winner Desperate Housewives is nominated for "Comedy Series Episode," along with The Simpsons, King of the Hill, Californication, and American Dad.  "Comedy Series Multi-Episode Storyline" nominee is The Office.  Marcia Cross (Desperate Housewives), Dana Delany (Desperate Housewives), and B.J. Novak (The Office) are nominees for the "Performance in a Comedy Series" honor.


 In the "Drama Series Episode" category, nominees include hard-hitting programs from Boston Legal, The Cleaner, Gossip Girl, Life, and Mad Men.  The "Drama Series Episode - Mental Health" category saw nominated episodes of Flashpoint, Grey's Anatomy, In Plain Sight, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, and Raising the Bar. Ellen Burstyn (Law & Order: SVU), Blake Lively (Gossip Girl), Mary McCormack (In Plain Sight), Christopher Meloni (Law & Order: SVU), and William Shatner (Boston Legal) are up for "Performance in a Drama Series Episode".

Army Wives, Breaking Bad, The Cleaner, Eli Stone, and 90210 are competing in the "Drama Series Multi-Episode Storyline" category.  Actors Benjamin Bratt (The Cleaner), Justin Chambers (Grey's Anatomy), Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), Jessica Lowndes (90210) and Elizabeth Reaser (Grey's Anatomy) are vying for "Performance in a Drama Series Multi-Episode Storyline."
 
For "TV Movie or Miniseries," nominees are Accidental Friendship, Bernard and Doris, Love Sick: Secrets of a Sex Addict, Queen-Sized, and Sybil. Performance nominees are Tammy Blanchard (Sybil), Jessica Lange (Sybil), Sally Pressman (Love Sick: Secrets of a Sex Addict), Susan Sarandon (Bernard and Doris), and Chandra Wilson (Accidental Friendship).
 
PRISM Awards also honors daytime TV, teen and children's programming, talk shows, news programming, documentaries, biographical shows, unscripted non-fiction, original DVDs, music recordings, comic book storylines, interactive media, and film festival features among others.  A complete list of nominees can be found at www.eiconline.org.
 
Honorees are selected by a 80-person committee of entertainment industry professionals and technical experts from the fields of medicine, mental health, and addiction.  In addition to the ceremony, a magazine format show will be taped for telecast on FX and other networks, and will be showcased at a Congressional reception in Washington, DC in September in celebration of National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month.
