Mary R, a supervisor and buyer for Solutia, shared her thoughts about the book with us:

"I enjoyed the playful style the book was was written in, and when I see the bright red color on my shelf I am reminded to think of new ways to respond in the sometimes tricky situations in which I find myself.

I hope to use the techniques in the book to help me overcome the challenges I face in my work  - as we need to learn new ways of working if we are going to survive in these tough economic times."

Thanks for your thoughts Mary!

Millions of people are currently experiencing extra stress as they try to cope with the uncertainties of these trying economic times.  With that in mind, extra care and compassion on your part can help ease the emotional pain that many are experiencing.

Doc Childre, founder of HeartMath, a leading stress research institute, has written a free booklet, De-Stress Kit for the Changing Times, that provides a few simple practices to help people intercept and manage stress during this period of challenge and uncertainty.  As a Corporate Jester you should be managing your stress level and helping others to do the same.

We like this free daily briefing email that "challenges conventional wisdom and delivers actionable insights".  This free service can quickly become your personal research assistant, handpicking, distilling and disseminating the best, most useful leadership stories from a wide range of sources (click here to see all the places they search).

In other words, they do all the research and you get the innovative ideas you need to lead - a really good way for Jesters to increase the amount of information they are taking in!

In economic hard times, small gestures that can make a significant difference in the attitudes and perspectives of your colleagues and employees are often ignored.  One area that seems to be getting hit hard at the moment is employee recognition.

In many organizations, employee recognition programs (if they existed at all) were badly managed with very few regularly reviewed and adjusted to align with the changing wants and needs of the organizations members.  In fact, in a July 2008 SHRM poll of HR professionals, 71% of those responding indicated that their organization's service award program had not changed in the last 10 years.

It is critical during these tough economic times for people to feel useful and appreciated for the work they do - especially those that have been at the organization for awhile.

So what can you do?  No matter your formal role within your organization, think about some low or no cost ways to recognize those doing good work around you - even if that seems to run contrary to the focus others have taken.

Here is something very easy to do.  Your Jester challenge is to write a handwritten note to someone that deserves some recognition.  Do that once a week for the next four weeks and see what happens.

For some more thoughts about employee recognition, read this article that appeared in the 12/08
edition of HR Magazine by clicking here.

As Jesters we love to stay informed.  These days that means being connected to lots and lots of online resources.  Until recently we were having trouble remembering all the login information for all our various accounts.
Then a Jester told us about RoboForm - software that memorizes and stores your info the first time you log into a site, then automatically supplies it when you return.  We love the program (and so does PC Magazine and the Wall Street Journal).  Even better, it is free!  Check Roboform out by clicking here.

David Riveness, founder and CEO of Corporate Jester has officially moved to Portland, Oregon!  To send him a "congratulations on your move" email, click here.

-   Check out Animoto, the popular website that is making traditional slideshows a thing of the past using "Cinematic Artificial Intelligence".  It is a great resource for those charged with creating photos presentations at company functions or conferences.  To try it, click here.

We are still looking for positive amazon.com reviews from those who have enjoyed the book and are willing to share their comments with others.  To read what others have said, or to leave your own short review, click here.
