Brooke, a Senior Consultant
at Dell, Inc. shared
her thoughts after reading the book for the first time.

"The Secret Life of the Corporate Jester  encourages discovering "blind spots" that can potentially impede long term progress and success for organizations both large and small.

"Groupthink" - cohesive groups unlikely to raise questions that challenge the majority opinion - is pervasive in today's corporate culture, and Dave does a stellar job of promoting, invoking, and coaching readers to actively facilitate change.

A MUST read for any corporation willing to integrate and embrace the corporate jester."

Thanks for sharing your feedback with us Brooke - we are truly happy you enjoyed the book!

manipulation

Corporate Jesters continuously struggle to pass on their insights in ways that are positive, non-confrontational and supportive.  Although we have talked about techniques to do so in previous editions, it might be helpful to take a moment to examine not so positive tactics commonly used to manipulate others.  All of these, while potentially gaining a desired behavior change, may produce negative long term consequences as they don't create new awareness or paradigm shift.  As a jester, I suggest you be able to spot them - but avoid employing them yourself.

Labeling Tactic - the technique of applying a stereotypical label to a person based on one characteristic and then using that label to imply something else.

Friendship Tactic - the technique of getting someone to do something they would otherwise not do by leveraging a relationship.

Reciprocity Tactic:  The technique of providing something unasked for and then asking for something else in return.

Reciprocal Concession Tactic:  The technique of making a unreasonably large request followed immediately by a smaller request hoping it will be accepted to make up for the refusal of the first request.

Scarcity Tactic:  A technique in which pressure is exerted by suggesting a time or supply limit exists.

Low Ball Tactic:  The technique of exploiting a commitment by adding new aspects to that commitment after the fact.

Bait and Switch Tactic:  The technique of attempting to switch a initial commitment to another, completely different, commitment.

Jester Challenge:  For the next 24 hours be aware of how often these tactics are used in the world around you - at your organization, in political discussions, in the media.  Are YOU relying on any of them?
NFIB Logo
Recently Corporate Jester had the opportunity to work with the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB).

The NFIB is the leading small business association representing small and independent businesses. A nonprofit, nonpartisan organization founded in 1943, NFIB represents the consensus views of its members in Washington and all 50 state capitals. NFIB's mission is to promote and protect the right of their members to own, operate and grow their businesses.

Corporate Jester provided an interactive three hour workshop as part of a two-day leadership meeting focused on the organization's 2009 goals.  The day was a complete success and the concept of jestership resonated very well with the NFIB leadership creating conversation and insights I expect will carry over into the new year.

"The process of taking the concept of corporate jestership into a concrete model of how to transform a culture to one of frequent, frank, feedback was both engaging and valuable."

     - Bart Bruns, Director of Training, NFIB

Thanks Bart!  We had a great time as well and look forward to working with the NFIB again in the future.

yahoo groups logo

Corporate Jesters make an effort to challenge themselves with new ideas and different paradigms.  One great, free resource is the groups feature at yahoo.com.  Joining a group allows you to interact with others and stay informed via email digests.

If you are ready to jump right in, here are two groups we recommend:

The Human Resource Professional Network was designed to encourage Human Resource Personnel to bring forward issues, concerns, ideas, thoughts, and resolutions to our profession.  To join, click here.

CTI (Coaching & Training Ideas) is a community whose purpose is to bring professionals within the coaching and training fields together to share information and best practices with one another.  To join, click here.

A nice article about Corporate Jester and the San Miguel Leadership Institute (SMLI) was published in the August issue of Expansion, the popular CNN affiliated Mexican Business Magazine.

The article highlights the SMLI partnership between Corporate Jester and our good friend Jim Karger (accomplished labor lawyer, speaker and author of a great business book entitled Why Work isn't Working Anymore).
