90-second Jester Challenge: "Email Future You"
This month's Jester Challenge involves a
commitment into the future as well an an intriguing
website!
First, think about a particular blind spot you feel exists
for your organization. Pick one that is damaging
morale, results or culture. Take out a piece of paper
and fully describe the blind spot. What is it? Why
should addressing it be important to the
organization? What is
keeping the organization from recognizing it now? If
you
need a quick refresher on blind spots, click here.
Next, describe a vision of your organization fully
engaged in effectively understanding and addressing
the blind spot. What information or
perspectives would have been gained, changed,
enhanced or acknowledged? What new
conversations would be taking place?
Next, think about what it would take to move the
organization from A to B.
If you fully stepped into the role as a Jester what
behaviors could you exhibit to help move it there?
Who could you influence? How? In what situations
could you speak up? What specific behaviors could
you take to help illuminate the blind spot for
your
organization?
Next, click
here. You will be taken to "futureme", a very
clever website that essentially allows you to write a
private letter to yourself and have it emailed back to
yourself at any future date you pick.
Use the site to write yourself a email summarizing
everything about
your organization's blind spot - describe the current
situation and the future vision. Be sure to include
detailed Jester behaviors you can take to make a
difference. Choose to have the email sent to you in
one month.
When you receive the email determine whether there
is a gap between what you said was possible and the
behaviors you chose to take over the course of the past
month.
After reflection, revise your Jester goals and
summarize your new commitments in another
email scheduled to be delivered in 30 days.
Repeat this process until you successfully illuminate
the blind spot for your organization (as well as a path
for effectively addressing it).
As usual, we would love to hear your reactions after
completing this Jester Challenge. Would you send us
an email with your thoughts?
