Write on our wall to remember and honor

pink swirl ribbonWe have a lot to celebrate this October. First and foremost, we send out special thoughts and thanks to our mothers, sisters, daughters and friends who have fought breast cancer. For those who have won the fight, for those who haven't and for those who are fighting now, we honor you.

Would you like to honor someone's memory or a survivor's valiant fight? Then write on our wall. Click here, and we'll take you there.

Let us help you mount your defense against breast cancer

mammosuiteYou'll be seeing plenty of pink ribbons this month as groups and individuals celebrate breast cancer awareness. At Virginia Women's Center we are celebrating breast health awareness. That's because we are uniquely suited to help arm our patients with the three best tools for early detection.

Mammography Technologists Michele Rolle, R.T. (R) (M) and Sara
Wakefield, R.T. (R) (M), with our equipment, Siemens Novation DR

  • One, your medical providers encourage you to perform regular breast self exams to detect abnormalities.
  • Two, when you come for an annual appointment, your doctor or nurse practitioner will provide a clinical breast exam.
  • And three, we have in place a state-of-the-art screening mammography suite at our John Rolfe Commons office-and another coming in early 2009 to our Hanover office adjacent to Memorial Regional Medical Center.
Celebrate with us by making your appointment. Just call 288-4084. (Some of you have asked about online scheduling for mammography. We hope to make this available soon.)

The gift of health: Nutritional Fitness at Virginia Women's Center

The mission of the Nutrition Services department at Virginia Women's Center is to educate, motivate and empower our patients to improve their health and their lives forever! Our registered dietitians specialize in the unique needs of women across the life span. Using a customized plan to meet your individual health and wellness goals, we focus on education and flexibility. You may be a good candidate for our Empowerment Program.

This Empowerment Program is ideal for two kinds of women. One is the woman who is still a bit leery about what's entailed in a long-term commitment with a registered dietitian. The other is the woman who knows what she needs to do but could use a professional to coach her along. Patients begin with a one-hour consultation which includes a discussion of goals. Two half-hour visits are scheduled within a three month period. Unlimited telephone or email support is also available. Cost is $150, payable in full by credit card. Makes a great gift!
Coming October 29: Nutrition for Women Seminar

On November 12 and November 19, she and colleague Rachel Lyons, R.D., will address the basics about children's nutrition and nutrition specifically for women. Sign up at any Virginia Women's Center location or at the John Rolfe Family YMCA beginning October 15. Depression and Women

National Depression Screening Day is October 10. Virginia Women's Center would like to take this opportunity to encourage you to pay attention and respond to the warning signs of depression---whether your own or those of loved ones. Studies show that most Americans wait years before they seek treatment for a mental health disorder, and many never seek treatment at all. Check out the symptoms of depression to determine if you or someone you care about may need help.

Also, women who have previous history of depression or mental illness may also be at greater risk for postpartum depression. It's common for women to experience the "baby blues"---feeling stressed, sad, anxious, lonely, tired or weepy---following their baby's birth. But some women---up to 1 in 7---experience a much more serious mood disorder: postpartum depression. Learn more by clicking here
