Photo of the 6-15-11 Total Lunar Eclipse by Graham Kelaher in Perth Australia: "This was the darkest eclipse I have seen to date, with the milky way becoming easily visible. This shot was at maximum eclipse - 10 seconds @ ISO 800" An erupting volcano in the the Puyehue-Cordon Caulle volcanic chain in Chile contributed to the darkening of the eclipsed moon.

Hi there, you may have heard that there was a Total Lunar Eclipse on June 15, 2011. I am a little late in getting this out to you, but the effects of eclipses last for at least two weeks before and after the actual eclipse date. And since this is triple eclipse portal (3 eclipses on June 1, June 15 and July 1) the entire eclipse portal will last until the end of July.

Note: the June 1st eclipse was an 'Eclipse of the Midnight Sun' - a  partial solar eclipse at midnight in northern latitudes. Here is my post on that eclipse: . For a stunning picture of it see: http://fb.me/zeA4FHp8

The Total Lunar Eclipse this week on June 15 was quite spectacular as well. The full duration of Totality (a lengthy 100 minutes) was visible from the continent of south west Africa, Madagascar, the Middle East, central Asia, India, Sri Lanka, eastern China, Bangladesh, western Myanmar, western Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, western Indonesia, Antarctica, and western edge of Western Australia.

The Moon passed central through Earth's Umbra shadow. Eclipse at Moon rise was visible from the southern tip of Chile, eastern Argentina, eastern Brazil.  Eclipse at Moon set was visible from central Thailand, central  Cambodia, south west Vietnam, and mid west Australia.

It seems the only location it could not be seen from was here in North America;) I hope you got to see it. I hear it was spectacular; and the pictures from around the world are gorgeous - a red-black moon against the backdrop of the frothy Milky Way!

Total Lunar Eclipse 6-15-11 Australia
From Guy Ottewell, poet/astronomer, in his 'Astronomical Calendar 2011': On this eclipse day (June 15, 2011), 'the moon crosses through the constellation Ophiuchus and will be positioned roughly halfway between the bright red star Antares in Scorpius, and Nunki, the brightest star in the handle of the Teapot asterism of Sagittarius. The star clouds of the summer Milky Way in this particular region of the sky are bright and spectacular.... As the moon gradually becomes immersed in the Earth's shadow (during the eclipse) the sky will correspondingly darken. During totality, the moon will appear 10,000 to 100,000 times dimmer and will seem almost three-dimensional, like an eerily illuminated ball. From a non-light polluted location, the beautiful summer Milky Way appears nearby as a striking backdrop." THE ABOVE PHOTO was taken by Liz Gleeson of Townsville, North Queensland, Australia on June 15, 2011. She saw the effect that Guy Ottewell wrote about: "This was a stunning eclipse, and a real highlight was when the Milky Way became visible above a Full reddish Moon, stars everywhere!!"
